Wow that was fast....It sure seems to me that this grant is driven by location. We had a Vol FD in our County get a Ranger last year, so I just have a feeling the odds of us getting one in the same County is slim....I hope I'm wrong but for marketing purposes they would like to spread them all over the Country...

    Cool Polaris T.R.A.I.L.S. Grant

Anyone with an ATV track in their district should look into the Polaris T.R.A.I.L.S. Grant. We tried for a Ranger through U.S. Smokeless several times and were denied. We have a track locally that keeps us quite busy throughout the year. I found the trails program and figured "why not." A primary goal was track safety, what better way to improve safety? They give up to $10K for everything from lobbying for OHV parks to safety. We asked for $10K to purchase a Ranger 6x6. We had it within the month. They award every quarter and only just started the program in 06. Another dept. received an award the same time. Check out Polaris' website for more info. I'll have a pic of our pretty new Ranger on mine soon.

Not much news on the Polaris after the first DJ in this post. Must be slow..or not many announcements of DJs.

If I remember right, they come through snail mail. Haven't got mine....yet. Hopefully Kurt's wisdom and assistance will prevent such a negative impact on my life this year.

    Default Question

I wonder how many rounds of DJs they send out. Checked the mail, but nothing so far. Any veterans of this grant know how it works? This is my first time. Thanks

They arrive by snail mail and ususally there is only one round. They are quite diligent in most cases about making sure that everyrone gets notified one way or the other.

I'm watching the mail diligently and have yet to see anything. Any idea how long the DJ process takes to get them all mailed out? I hate to get my hopes up already.

    Default Same

Same here. Grant writing is just like sports. I get the same butterflys when it comes to grant time as I did when I played college basketball. Maybe thats what keeps me goin.

We have not gotten a DJ yet....When do they start letting agencies know if they are getting a ATV? Is it much latter in the year?

Seems to be too many of us left for them to be done with DJ's. I sent in a powerpoint with pics and about 5 examples.

Last year the first round of awards was posted online the first week of May. I have absolutely no idea how soon before that the awardees were actually notified. There were significantly more applicants last year as well; its anyones guess as to when awards will be made this year.

Got ours last Feb 13th. I sent pictures of an F3 tornado that went through our area of houses torn down and roads blocked. These pictures came out of a book that was published with stories from people trapped in their houses waiting on the fire dept and other rescuers to help them. Without personal ATV's, getting to some of them would have been impossible.

I'm thinking of changing my name to John.

I wonder what it feels like to actually receive a grant of some kind.

This John isn't as informed as Brian-John or Kurt-John, but we'd all love to help you out.

My dream — and I hope you don't find this too crazy — is that I would like the people of this community to feel that if, God forbid, there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do. You can't have people, if their houses are burning down, saying, 'Whatever you do, don't call the fire department!' That would be bad."
