    Default Leather Helmet History...

Alright, I was asked the other day about the significance of the raised ornamental decorations on the brim of the helmet. I thought I was versed in the history of the leather helmet, and at the very minimum thought I knew where I could get the answer to this question but I was stumped.

So, I pose the question, what is the significance of the raised ornamental decorations on the brim of the helmet?

    Why do firefighters wear suspenders?

To keep their pants from falling down.

But honestly, I would say what Kiwi said.

    Exclamation Well..........

If you REALLY want to know everything about Leather Helments, Go dig up Henry Gratacamp. Mr. Gratacamp invented the Leather Helment, back around 1860, in New York. He was a Tailor by trade, and a Volunteer fireman in Manhattan. No, Rick, I wasn't there......

well, he might not have been there when it was first made, but rumor is that he was one of the first recipients of the leather helmets......
