    Default AFG Portable Radios

Is there a limit to the number of portable radios AFG believes should be available ? AFG bought us 4 with the 2004 grant. We have purchased a few more since then. We would like to have enough on the trucks for each FF to have one, we feel this would help to improve FF safety and accountablility. We are considering asking for about 12, and 2-3 bank chargers. All radios we have, and will get, are ok with the interoperablilty statewide.

We also may ask for some type of accountability/tracking system, maybe something to intergrate with the SCBA's. Does anybody have any suggestions/example narratives, or know if they have funded any of these type of systems before? Both items deal directly with FF safety, so I would assume they would be ok.

Acccording to our FPS at Monday's workshop, one radio per seating position (similar to SCBA counts). Engine is a minimum of 4, everything else is based strictly on seats. Sounded like the only way to get an exception above seated positions was based on one radio for 2 firefighters (think 2 in-2 out).

I'm a believer in the Grace T-Pass 3 system for PASS/accountability system, and we were awarded for that in 2005. The sense i am now getting is that with the cost of that type of electronic system, the best chance for going that direction is on a regional application where several departments will be establishing an interoperable system. Not saying it can't be done solo, but they are looking harder at stretching dollars.

    Your mileage may vary.

In 2004 we received a grant for handheld radios and SCBA interface system to connect to the portables.

I put in for 20 portables and 20 of the SCBA communications devices. In the narrative I specified that each firefighter was to receive a complete como package.

We had 17 firefighters at the time.

If you would like, I can send you a copy of the narrative.

Hey Green do you know if this applies to EMS units also? My EMS is wanting me to apply for portables to tie into the new regional (7 County) radio system.

I'm clueless on EMS Warren. Kind of like the rest of my life.

Seems like one per seat would fit EMS well--or do you sometimes respond POV??
