    Thats kindof EXACTLY it! Haha! The last thing I need is this coming back around to bite me in the butt! Its a great little department, strong in tradition and we hire out of our volunteer pool. We dont in fact have medics as they are provided by the county. Im not too worried about saying where Im from on these boards. I trust you all like I would if we happen to be at the same scene.     There's nothing to worry about. Just don't get into anything contraversal untill your probation is done. Other than that be proud of who you are and where you're from. There are some on these forums who hide behind a screen name or lie about where they're from. We've seen a lot of that over the years. I'm not sure why they do it but the word coward comes to mind.

    Northern NJ, Outside of New York City

    Firefighter: 1st Year $49,000.00

    Firefighter/EMT-B: 1st Year $54,600.00

    Firefighter/Paramedic: 1st Year $62,400.00 (Rare in NJ, most Dept's NO ALS)

    Lieutenant: 1st Year $75,400.00

    Captain: 1st Year $85,800.00

    Battalion Chief: 1st Year $93,600.00

    Work Schedule: 24 hours on, 72 hours off, kelly day every six shifts. Overtime is not see easy to come by.

    This may seem like alot, but in Northern NJ, a 3 bedroom 2 bath home on a normal size lot sells for around $675,000 - $750,000. Hence the reason that most of the guys that work up north live in central and southern NJ. Housing is much much cheeper. There are a few paid departments in Central and Souther NJ, however the pay is in no way comparable. Starting salary for a Firefighter/EMT-B in most places in Southern NJ is about $32,000 per year.     top step makes about $66,000 a year. then there's educational insentive at 5% for an AA and 7.5 for Bachelors.

    HEY GUYS
    well im intrested in becoming a voulenteer fireman.
    im intrested in this because my friend is a voulenteer fireman and it sounds like its a lot of fun, is very intresting and beneficial.
    I also need to earn money doing this.
    My friend said that he gets paid $50 dollars and hour and is almost on the clock all the time. I was blown away when he told me this.
    I was wonderin if this could be true or if he is bull****tin me.
    he said when he went to apply he was given the option of bein paid.
    please help me out and tell me if he is right.
    he seemed pretty honest and seemed to know what he was talking about.

    These figures are rough. We build sick time at 16.9 hours per pay period and vaction starts at 6.9 hours per pay period... Free Health Care for employes...

    Forget parity with the Police department -- how do we get parity with Cambridge?

    Montreal is once again in negotiations for our next contract. The employer has yet to learn how to negotiate. If you follow the FH news articles, we tend to be one of the more militant groups around.

    Should make for an intersting fall. Firefighters are already wearing lime green union issue uniform instead of the standard issue.

    I know 9 of the Jakes on that list... I work with them at the Fire Academy or had them as an instructor while I was there.

    Since I do read the Herald on occasion, should I be allowed to see what the salaries of Pat Purcell, Howie Carr, Margery Eagan, Joe Scaccia and the other reporters and writers are, too? After all, if I pay for the paper, I am funding the operations of the "tattletale tabloid"...

    How about the pressmen and the drivers of the delivery trucks?

    How about the hawkers on the streetcorners?

    Did the Herald mention that Cambridge is an ISO class 1 FD?

    In Canada (Quebec at least), salaries are public knowledge. You could theoretically walk into town hall and has to see how much everyone is paid.

    The salary of elected officials and top managers routinely make it into the newspaper. Granted, I've rarely seen people comment on our salaries. And there's a large difference between our stated and actual pay as well.

    I don't think anyone in Cambridge, or any other City for that matter, should be embarassed. We more than earn our pay.

    I am a BC in a Midwest City with a population of 45,000 which can swell to 100,000 during business hours. We work 24/48 with a Kelly Day. I get 10 tours of vacation, medical/dental, clothing allowance, tuition reimbursement and I don't consider sick time as I rarely use it. I make 75,000/year.

    Compared to FDNY BC salary of 144,000...75,000 seems pultry...until you consider that according to Sperling's, it is 98% more expensive to live in NY City than in the Greater Cincinnati area. I would have to make a comparative salary of 147,000/year in NYC to equal the standard of living I now enjoy. Everything is relative. I think I'll stay with the 11,000 runs we make a year and the 15 minute drive to work.

    Lt. : 67,983
    Capt. : 74,163

    42h work week. All hours over 40h at 150% (since we work a 42h a week, basic pay has 2h of overtime a week on it). 250% if we leave the City limits.

    Minimum staffing +/- 496 FF per shift. During the busy summer months (June, July, August) about 120 FF's on overtime on day shift, about 50 on overtime on the night shift. The rest of the year 20-30 on overtime per shift during most weeks.

    FF's about $8,000 a year in OT. Officers $20,000-$60,000. Last years overtime budget for 2300 firefighters was $16 million. If you were to average it out evenly that would be $7,000 each -- but the mass of the overtime is Lt. and Capt.

    Anything past Captain isn't unionized.
