I have been on a year and a half and am making a whole $9.50 an hour or $23,712 a year either way I have to keep a part time job to make ends meet. But you don't chose this career for the money right?!
i make 7.75 as a firefighter paramedic. it works to about 18000 a year, good benefits though. my wife wants a divorce and i think its cuz i dont make enough. but if she didnt do crack we would be able to pay the bills
I make around 50K a year as a first year Firefighter/EMT.
About $110K per year as a top step firefighter, before overtime.:)
In CA salaries vary. Many departments have a FF starting base wage rate of 5000-7000 per month with increases for education and paramedic. Standard work week is usually 56 hours. Not all departments have Lts, so the comparison would be with the first level company officer, either Captain or Lt. Often this salary would be 100-120,000. Of course things like OT, Education pay, EMT-P pay or special assignment pays can all come into play. The IAFF has a data base and if you are a IAFF department you can access this info. Our trade off for salaries is a much lower staffing level per capita. Many Cities run three person engines, we often have a staffing of .6 positions for every 1000 citizens protected. My department protects 350,000 people in a high crime community with a paid staff of 270. We average about 3000 runs per engine. Paid well - yes, worked harder - maybe. Our housing here is also a little higher that much of the country.
We receive 9 vacation days per year, plus seniority leave form 6 to 13 additional shifts based on service years, work week is 56 hours, 48 on 96 off rotation. We do not get Kelly days in the rotation due to the total time off. We also are at 100% Union department with a very active political voice.
Good luck to all in their contracts, the grass maybe greener, but come summer it turns brown and then burns 1,000,000 + acres!

Base FF/EMT in my city is around $65,00. Paramedic stipend is 500.00 a month. I have been on 6 years and I will make a base of $78,000 add an extra $18,000 in overtime by the end of the year. Housing is high. My 3 bed 2 bath 1/4 acre lot cost me $400,000 probebly would be pretty tight with out my wifes job. California is an expensive place to live. The upside is I live 1 mile from my station work a 48/96 schedule and have full benies for my family plus full medical after retirement. It does not matter where you live it is all good if your doing what you love.

Ive been working for 6 months and im makeing 30k year with 3 weeks paid vacation and 1 week of personal time off. also my employeer pays for any college class' i want to take and gives me 3 hours of paid school time i can take off a week to attend these class'

I just saw this site on a randomb search...thought I would put my 2 cents in. I'm the fire team leader at my job.....I'm a derrickman (2nd in command) the driller is the boss, on an oil rig. land based. I've been in the field for 7 years.
I work 4 days on.......4 days off 12 hour days year round working holidays if my days on fall on those days. So I work half the year. This year I've made $81,429. I work for Ensign United States Drilling. I don't think I'm a firefighter but I've put three of them out.........now on an oil rig a fire at the wrong depth can burn the rig down in 60 sec. Mostly I smack my hands (underlings) in the *** for smoking in non smokeing areas. Try to stop a fire before one can start.
How many looking at pay cuts?
Whatever I can steal from the fire scene.
Still looking for a decent market for burnt 2x4s.
About 60K with a little OT and the atual value according to our HR with all the bennies is around 85K for health dental and other miscl :D
$59k for a first year FF/driver-operator. In 2 weeks I'll get a 2k/yr pay increase.
