College Incentive 250 per year completed up to 4 years .
10 years in the dept and making around $42,000 before overtime.....Pathetic :(
How much you make is less important than how many days you work. 100,000 a year is good, but do you have to work 100 or 120 days for it?
St. Louis County. B/C with 14 years current department. I made 110k last year with 4 day ot. We also get paid OT for extra day or Kelly day. We work 48-96. included in that is holiday pay sick day incentive, longevity, paramedic increase and education pay. Health insurance covered for whole family. Get 11 days vacation and 3 personnel days. House cost 4 bedroom 2 story 35 miles from work is 220,000. Higher pay seems at my department to bring more problems. The greed among employees is out of control. People that hate being a firefighter can't leave and go make the same money else where.
South Florida - Large City Department
2 years on, FF/Paramedic assigned to Medic Unit w/ Bachelors Degree
$51,000
Word is they want to take 10% of that, plus....
Starting Base for FF/EMT is $38,000
Hey guys, I see alotta pretty good salaries on here (deserved no doubt) and I'm just wondering,I know alotta guys work second jobs. Does working a couple days on the ambulance or doing a second job really add much? or is there not really alotta time to do that. I hear alotta guys around here say that they make over 100k with their second job included, which is pretty sweet but I was wondering how hard it is to actually find the time to work the second job.
Before retiring in Jan 2009, gross bass pay with all perks added was approx. $92K as a top step Firefighter with 30 years. Retired pay gross is $51K+ with medical included a year. Reserve Capt, I make $115 per 24 hour shift, working 4-6 shifts a month. Pickup money and get to guide young Firefighters toward the best job on the planet!
New Orleans - Rookie
Including Millage Pay and 5% EMT pay,
33,000 goes to 38,000 after first year
This year I will make around 46k.
I work for one of the two large departments in north Texas and as a d step firefighter (maxed out is f step) my base says 56k but my 2010 end of year check said 63k almost 64k after my flsa, ot, and education pay were added in. I worked 280 hours of ot last year, just a little over 1 shift a month.
A maxed out firefighter's base is 62.8k, but we have built in longevity supplements of 3 percent at 5 years, another 3 added at 10 years (that's 6% total now for the math wiz out there) and another 3 percent added at 15 years for a grand total of 9% extra ever pay day based on your earnings in that pay period, including ot.
Florida, State Forest Service, 4 years in, $24,500 (to start, and since, no raises in 6 years)

I knew I shouldn't have clicked on this thread!
I work at a city department in Mississippi. I will have my 1 year on Sept 11th. I currently only have basic stuff (1001 I/II, HAZMO, Rope 1, Confined Spaces).
My hourly rate is a little over $8 an hour lol. When I complete EMT-B in a few months...Still under $9 an hour. When I have two years and am a driver/operator...under $10 an hour.
All I can say is thank God for my wife's engineering job.

Shift geat FSLA pay - I work M-F so have no idea how much that is.
State required 2% a year though we usually get 4%.
9 24-hour shifts or 18 days off a year, year 1-5, 21 year 6-19; 23 year 10 plus
100 Health Benefits.
Not eligable for any overtime. That's covered by qualified volunteers.
I am not sure what is your point. I thought you advocated merit? Under State Law you do not start receiving state supplimental pay until after being employed one year. FYI: Louisiana State Supplimental Pay came when the state discontinued providing state fire service to state properties more than 50 years ago. Since the state does not pay local taxes the state provided a stipen to fire and police that meet a certian standards. I guess they could start their own department aagain and earn a class 1 rating. Longevity pay (2% of base pay) does not kick in till you have 10 years of service. The city does not pay 100% health benfits. Matter of fact I have a $4000 deductible for a family of 4+, or $2000 per year for individual policies.
9 working day X 24 hours is = 216 hour per month, or 27 8 hours average work days. Do not forget the 12 holidays per year. Even with all vacation and holidays I averaged 42+ hours a week. That is with 30+ years of service.
No overtime? Where did you hear that? We are over 80 FFs short and have to hireback 10+ FFs per day. During Katrina and Gustiva we hired back, working 36 hr on and 12 hrs off. I was hired back several times last year due to manpower shortages.
As far as volunteers we do not have volunteers in the City of Baton Rouge Fire Department. Several departments neighboring BRFD are going or have gone full time. You going to comment on them?
