First of all, I'm new to posting here, so I appalogize if I'm beating a dead horse here.
I was wondering how everyone else rolls out apparatus. I know there are many scenarios, so for the sake of discussion, lets use a structure fire, and an accident w/ injuries/ poss. extrication.
for structure fire my dept rolls 1st engine (2 & 3 tankers if rural then other trucks) 2nd truck 3rd engine 4th heavy rescue. for auto incidents it heavy rescue the 1 engine (tankers if needed). if accident in neighboring areas that dept gets dispatched as well, but our two trucks (HR & E) go together always
On a structure fire we roll our front line engine (1250gpm, 750 gal tank), 2nd engine (1250 gpm, 3000 gal tank), the ladder (2000gpm, 300 gal tank), heavy rescue, and then our 3rd engine(1250gpm, 750 tank).
On an accident we roll our front line engine (which is stuffed to the gills to use as a rescue pumper), then our heavy rescue.
The main reason I started this post is to get some input on running the ladder 2nd, instead of 3rd out. I've had discussions with the Chief on this because we end up putting the ladder at the end of the block and never use it.
All first alarms get 2 engines, 1 truck and a rescue. During the day it is a full assignment due to lack of man power. so 4 engines, 2 ladders, 2 rescues.
For a motor vehicle accident with injuries we dont roll unless there is entrapment or fire. MVA with entrapment gets 2 engines and both rescues.
For all calls above single engine,we run our Tower (no pump/tank) first out, with an engine second out, another engine third out (if staffing allows) and an ambulance. We found that given our poor hydrant spacing and narrow intown streets we needed to ensure the tower's placement and lay in from the hydrant or roll in with the first due engine. So far its worked fairly well as long as the tower stops and lets the engine by if the incident is on a dead end street.Quote:

In our dept. our #1 engine goes first, rescue next, aerial 3rd, engine 2, and then engine 3. If it mutual aid our #2 engine rolls unless the aerial is requested. When it is mutual aid for Jaws our rescue runs, with the department requesting mutual aid supplying the pumper.
Ahhhh another Chief who thinks the Ladder is just a vehicle with an aerial device. Would it be fair to say he only uses the aerial for an elevated master stream for a well-involved building with fire through the roof (because there were no aggressive truck company operations performed early in the fire)????Quote:

Would'nt you want your ladder to be first out or not? So if you ever need it on a scene you probably would have to move a few pieces of apparatus to get it where you need it right? Do you have crosslays on your ladder? Why cant the ladder run first, drop a line and set up water supply to fed it?Quote:

In the Chiefs defense, He started in January, and we were discussing the old regimes roll-out (that's what I'm pushing to change). He is for change. I don't mean to brag, but our department has some awesome guys that are very aggresive, and to be honest, we haven't need to use an elevated waterway. Luck has been a big part of that as well. I think that aggresiveness is why they have always used the two pumpers out first. I just feel that one of these days we won't have the luck on our side. I'm not bashing my department, I just want to make a good thing better.

Our old ariel was a '73 Pirsh with a 100' stick. That rolled last because a) It was way underpowered. It wouldn't get up a hill unless you had it in 2nd or 3rd, and b) it had a tip load of about 300lbs.
Our new one is '02 E-One 100' Bronto. It has a 2000gpm pump, 300 gal tank, foam, 50' of 1-3/4 on the front bumper, 2 1-3/4 crosslays, 1 2-1/2 crosslay, and 800' of 6" LDH.
Depending on which district it is in some are more hydranted than others.

On all residential fires, we roll

3. Engine 1750gpm 1000 gal (HQ)
4. Air/Light Unit (South Station)
5. Pickup/Fire Cop Unit (South Station)
We use the Tower as a Quint but by doing that we also have the truck taking the address so theres no having to move apparatus if you need the stick. We also get 2 mutual aid engines coming from the nearist companies on confirmed jobs.
MVA's get
1. (HQ) Engine w/ rescue tools
2. (SS) Engine w/ rescue tools
3. (SS) Pickup/Fire Cop Unit
4. (HQ) Tower
5. (SS) Air/Light Unit
On structure fires we automatically roll our main pumper (1000 gal/1250gpm) and our fast attack/first response rig (300 gal skid) as well as our brush rig (700-800 gal). We also have another pumper (500-700 gals) available as backup. As we are a rural department, we have a mutual aid agreement with 4 other departments. They also send a minimum of 1 pumper and all available tankers for water shuttle.
On vehicle situations, its our first response/fast attack again & whoever's district the incident is in also sends out their pumper. Mutual aid's extrication team handles the extrication & if they're not on the rigs they respond in POV's.
Structure fires get
1. 1000/1000 CAFS pumper
2. 1450 gal tanker
3. heavy rescue /lights /cascade system
4. ambulance
5. 2nd 1000/1000 pumper to establish water supply or relay pump
6. mutual aid engine company
7. mutual aid tankers as needed
we are rural with no hydrants so tanker shuttle is necessary

SFD gets 3 engines, a truck, a heavy rescue, a Chief and an ambulance (from county EMS). Target hazard gets 4 engines and 2 trucks. All our engines are ALS so no need for a seperate medic unit.
An MVC gets an ALS engine, an extrication rig (truck or rescue, whichever is closer) and an ambulance.
