Here's another resource. They have some reconditioned scanners that might fit your need. Do you need a trunk tracker? If not, the reconditioned Nascar 800Mhz scanner is $99.00 and I know it works for emergency services on certain systems.

If you are looking to get a scanner that we be up to date, that is one that will pick up EVERYTHING then you should get a digital scanner. These are pretty expensive. Try www.scannermaster.com or ebay. I use a uniden bc780xlt which was about $400 a couple of years ago. It does everything but recieve digital. A good digital will be about $500.

See if it can be programmed by computer. Programming a trunked system into a scanner can be confusing as hell. A good one is Radio Shack Pro-95, they should be mostly on clearance now so they're cheap(er) but can monitor most systems as long as they are not digital or encrypted.

A good place to ask question is http://www.radioreference.com but if I was looking for a scanner you need to find out a few things about your area. Is anyone that you want to listen running a digital system. If so you are going to need something that can pick up APCO 25. Also look on eBay. The radio shack models are very simple to use and there is a great software my by www.starrsoft.com I have a radio shack Pro-96 and love it. But just search radio reference in the area datebase to see what systems are in your area.
