Man Follows Bird Up Tree; Chopper Saves Him
$2,000 Cockatoo Called Man's Baby
POSTED: 3:08 pm EDT April 4, 2007
PORTER, Texas -- Coast Guard helicopters are used for lots of rescues, but they're not usually like this.
A Texas man's expensive pet bird got loose, so he climbed about 60 feet up a pine tree to retrieve it. Then they got stuck.
After the man's sister called 911, firefighters discovered they couldn't back up their truck to the tree because of wet ground.
So they called in the Coast Guard chopper.
It lowered William Hart and his $2,000 cockatoo, named Geronimo, safely to the ground.
Hart said Geronimo is his baby, and he'd do it again.

Man Sentenced Over Cat Rescue Shooting
Apr 17, 5:09 PM (ET)
KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) - A man who shot at firefighters after they refused to get his cat out of a tree has been sentenced to five months in jail. Jeffrey Francis Cullen, 59, of Kingman, was also ordered to be on intensive probation for five years as part of his sentence, handed down Friday by Mohave County Superior Court Judge Robert R. Moon.
The relatively light sentence did not sit well with the prosecutor.
"The state's position is that if it's the first time or the 20th time, prison is appropriate," prosecutor Lee Jantzen said.
Cullen called the Hualapai Valley Fire Department on Aug. 17 and reported a tree fire, but once the three-person crew arrived, Cullen told them he wanted his cat rescued from the tree.
Fire Department spokeswoman Sandy Edwards said a battalion chief told Cullen to call animal control or to wait for the cat to get hungry and come down.
The response apparently incensed Cullen, who went inside his home, got a small handgun and came out shooting.
The firefighters fled, taking with them a 12-year-old boy who had come to see their fire truck. None was struck.
Cullen was facing four counts of aggravated assault and one count of disorderly conduct involving weapons. Under a plea deal, Cullen was found guilty on the four assault charges as non-dangerous offenses, and the disorderly conduct charge was dismissed.
He faced up to three years and six months on each count, which would have been served concurrently, according to the agreement.
"Firemen, they shouldn't have to be subject to that," Moon told Cullen before handing down the sentence.
Cullen admitted to deputies after his arrest that he had been drinking.
"My main thing is going to stay off of alcohol," Cullen told the judge.

I can tell you the risk vs. the gain is not worth it. I work for a utility company trainnig emergency responders on how to react to utility emergencies. The basic concept the cat was on top of a light light needs electricity to go one they were close to power lines and secondary voltage can kill you as easy is high voltage difference being open casket vs. closed. . The OSHA 10' rule was not followed . Real TV has a firefighter that was doing the same task and gets shocked x 2. He lived never to be the same again.
If a firefighter comes in contact with the line is he or she a hero. Ask yourself why 80,000 injuries occur yearly and 100 LODD.
