Selden fire officials face arrests over funds

    BY ERIK GERMAN
    erik.german@newsday.com

    March 20, 2007, 12:14 AM EDT

Five members of Selden's Board of Fire Commissioners are expected to be arrested Tuesday in connection with a probe of the fire district's spending practices over the past several years, District Attorney Thomas Spota's office said Monday night.

In addition to the commissioners, a former member of the Terryville Fire Department, a former Montauk fire official and an official with the East Moriches Ambulance District are expected to surrender to authorities to face "charges related to mismanagement of taxpayer funds," said Spota's spokesman, Robert Clifford.

The Selden, Terryville and East Moriches officials are expected to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip, where grand jury indictments are expected to be unsealed, Clifford said. The Montauk official is expected to be arraigned in East Hampton Town Justice Court.

Newsday disclosed on Nov. 1 that Selden commissioners spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars at dozens of conferences in Las Vegas, Orlando, Fla., and other cities over the last decade.

And no one will care because the fire taxes on Long Island are less than a meal at a good resturant, cost to fill up the boats gas tank, a spa weekend for the wife and the allowance most teenagers get for the month. My school taxes $7,000. and going up 500-600 per year average. My fire taxes $275 a year rising 5 to 20 a year with two new trucks and a boat. Where do you think my concerns are.

Hey Smokey, do you have any behind the scenes info?

If they are guilty, then by all means hang em high. I hate to see departments get dragged into a political storm just because of a few bad eggs. I wish them well through an upcoming tough time.

Nope. Not my neck of the woods. I agree that a few bad eggs can do a lot of damage to a department's reputation. There isn't enough info in the attached article. Were these fire department conventions training related?

Fire departments (not picking on LI) MUST have financial controls in place so that members can not spend money in an unethical or illegal manner without being quickly discovered. If someone is discovered to have stolen funds, they must be dealt with accordingly and by that I mean involving law enforcement.

    You haven't visited Newsday's "blog"...LOL...

And I totally agree. My friend's father RETIRED from teaching at a large school district in Suffolk County with a pension of about $98,000 A YEAR. They sold their house just when the market was picking up and moved to FL where they probably paid 1/4 of what they sold their LI house for. Then they helped my friend buy her house in FL...

I also have a cousin whose daughter is having a Sweet 16 -- she's wearing a Vera Wang dress (the ladies will know what I mean!).

And that other thread is nothing more than 1,300+ posts of people attacking each other, with a lot of the actual substance of the issue being lost therein. I posted this article 8 hours before anyone else (you) did, and I put it in a separate thread so it would actually be SEEN by people who didn't feel like wading through the crap in the other thread. Thanks, though.

Chauffer6, don't you realize we should only have 10 or 11 threads on the forums that each should be 200 pages long? My goodness man, what were you thinking? Why start a new thread on a relavant topic when we can scan through 1300+ posts that are old?

The Webteam should take away the New Thread button entirely. We should just continue threads for ever.
"This thread is being closed as it is off-topic and not related to the fire industry." - Isn't that what the Off Duty forum was for?
