Default Time's Running Out for the Firehouse Magazine National Run Survey

Are you curious where your department stacks up compared to others across the country? Where does your busiest engine company fall compared to FDNY, Cleveland and Detroit? How does your pay compare to departments that work the same amount of hours? Click here to participate. This is for career departments. The deadline has been extended to April 5.

    Question Caught in the middle...

    Where do combination departments belong?

Since the career members of my department handle 83% of the emergencies without dispatching our volunteer firefighters, we often consider ourselves a "mostly career" service despite having 20 volunteers vs. 16 career firefighters. So, when you guys first advertised the latest run survey, we submitted our stats. Unfortunately, we were told that the survey was for fully career departments only. I wonder how that can be...

We run a single engine company with minimum staffing of three firefighters just like the fully-career house five miles down the road. Although most of our citizens don't realize it, we're actually busier than some of the stations in our much-larger neighboring departments. We'd like to showcase that.

We want to see our salary figures up next to those of our brothers across the nation. As understaffed as we are, we're proud of what we're able to accomplish. We'd like the chance to compare budgets, population, number of stations and number of staffed companies with everyone else. Yet, it seems that as a combination department, we're relegated to the volunteer survey, which is not as expansive.

Firehouse, you should either defer combination departments into one run survey category or the other based on pre-set criteria... Or you should create a third survey for those of us that just don't fit the paid or volunteer mold. Having a blanket policy of "100% career or else" isn't fair.

    Wink

I have read Firehouse for years. I find it funny that some of the larger fire departments do not respond to the annual run and salary survey.

I have talked to a few of the powers to be at these departments that do not respond and they usually say that this is BS and they donít have time or the desire to submit figures to Firehouse. They just throw the survey that is sent to them in file 13! They do submit statistics to the NFPA where it counts.

It really not a complete comparison of all departments! Only those that choose to send in the information.

Hi--the Volunteer Run Survey usually goes out in May, while the National Run Survey is being completed.

We will have the Volunteer Run Survey form posted in a few weeks. You can find the forms for both here: http://www.firehouse.com/magazine/surveys/forms/

As for the combination departments, please use the National Run Survey.

    Thanks!

Stupid question on my part, but why are there two surveys? I mean, with the exception of staffing per shift and salary range, why not combine them into one survey? I mean, don't both surveys ask for the same information?

after all, there are some volunteer departments that are bigger and busier than career departments........

The form says for career departments only. I called the number provided for more information and was told that it was for fully-career departments only. Of course, that came after I'd already submitted our department. Now you are telling me that we were good to go. Is there any way I can check to see if we were included or do I need to resubmit?
