Face Masks
One quick question. If we are asking for new SCBA and we are asking for 10 units. Should we be asking for face masks for just 10 units or for all of our men because of the, everyone has their own mask thing?
Just a note. Our MSA rep. quoted us right around $5000 for complete units with spare bottles if we got the 2002 compliant. After Aug 31 we have to go with the 2007 compliant and he told me to add $900 each for the new ones.

For AFG you need to apply for current standards so no one can purchase 2002 compliant packs with a 2007 AFG award. It's the standard that is in place at the time of application, not the time of award.
Pricing is coming in over $6k on all manufacturers for 2007 compliant packs.

NFPA for individual masks
Kurt all I have found in NFPA is the ability to sanitize between users. I'm not saying it's not gross but.... Do you know of a NFPA that specificly calls for each FF having their own personal masks?PHP Code:
JAy sharing masks is not goog or recommended so I would ask for the balance of face masks to make sure your people are not sharing masks.
Your price seem farily close for 2007 prices.;)
To expand so I don't have to reply, Are you saying when you ask for 14 new scba and there are 30 qualified personall in the department you would ask for 14 complete units (mask and unit) and 16 additional masks?

Not sure about the NFPA standards; perhaps someone else in here can relate that but I beleiee the OSHA is contained in OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard 29CFR1910.134. I'm sorry not enough time right now to research this for you.
I would go for additonal mask for at least all "interior firefighters" that you have certified.

There is nothing that I can find within the NFPA standards that requires individual facepieces per se. The argument is that all firefighters must have fit testing to determine the size facepiece that will protect them. With that in mind you have 14 SCBA and 30 firefighters, what size mask do you leave on the apparatus, if you leave 14 large facepieces on board, what happens if 14 show up that were tested for xlarge, therefore violating the standard for a proper facepeice seal. The fit testing requirement lends itself to having individual facepieces.

I don't think the grant reviewers will have any problems with you buying extra masks. In '05 I wrote for 10 SCBAs (complete with facepieces and bottles) and then an additional 15 masks (one for each firefighter) and was awarded with no problems. I also wrote the same for one of my mutual aid departments and they had no problems. Justification for the extra in your narrative is key.

Individual masks is normal for most application, individual voice amps won't fly though since you only need 1 per SCBA.
