Turk 182

The old movie"Turk 182"about a FDNY firefighter injured off duty and getting the run around from the city on his disability claim so his brother starts plastering his nickname and helmet number all over the city has been making the rounds on the high dollar cable system here in Memphis.
My question is,if the newsies in the movie were asking the question"Who IS Turk 182?", why didn't someone in the department realize,"Hey,that's our buddy's number.Didn't old So and So start calling him Turk when he was right outta probie school?".
I know,I know:it would have shortened the movie and his brother wouldn't have gotten to nail Kim Cattrall. But still,you think someone would have made the connection even if he didn't blab it to the world.

I always thought FDNY was supposed to be so tight knit that anyone working with someone would know all their faults and were just waiting for the guy to get married so he could mail them to his "buddy's" intended.
You're right.It's gotta be a plotline.

If you recall the basis of the movie, it was the mayor puttin' the screws to the firefighter (sound familiar?). So I would guess his fellow firefighters wouldn't say anything regarding it. (The graffiti)

Didn't say that,now did I?I just wondered if somewhere in the story (y'know "Meanwhile back at the ranch....")somebody didn't recognize his number even if he didn't say anything.Firefighters are tight that way.
Just applying real world logic to a fictional story.
