Amateurs practice until they get it right; professionals practice until they cannot get it wrong. Which one are you?

'The fire went out and nobody got hurt' is a poor excuse for a fireground critique.

i think what he means is that the department does not have a limit on how many firefighters they can have on their roster. they are always taking new applicants, just like we do.

Could you explain that?? Doesn't make sense to me.

Also, I am not aware of a single VFD in Maryland that has a limit on the number of members, or a Residence requirement. Both are Counter productive to having a lot of people, which we strive for.

I can explain what it means to me, though your results may vary.

Typically my department requires an applicant to live in the township or within a reasonable response time of the station. An Open Enrollment member can live outside this area. Because they may be geographically distant, the requirements are slightly different for them. They have to run more duty crews since we can't expect them for home response.
A lot of this dates back to when duty crews were new and most of our coverage was from home response. Now that almost everything is covered by duty crews the distinction between Open Enrollment and not is rather blurred.
As you said, limiting applicants is counter productive. If someone is willing to drive hours to run with us, who am I to say no.
