We have Aluminum numbers/Letters on our apparatus. Our ALFs were from the factory, our KME was done with a local machine shop. KME would not add the letters due to airflow/over heating concerns. We requested the air flow requirements for the engine and the airflow capacity of the grill then designed the numbers to keep enough air flowing and prevent problems. The reflective material has held up well, our ladder is now 15 years old with no signs of wear.

The letters are Aluminum with welded studs on the back so they can be fastened through the grill. Red reflective material was added to the front to finish the project. This process has held up very well even during prolonged operations while flowing lots of water. Our only issue with overheating occurred with funeral bunting on very warm days.

We used magnetic backed sheet steel large numbers and letters. A non marked reserve apparatus could quickly become the in service apparatus just by adding the appropriate numbers and letters. Front, both sides, rear and top. Excellent answer already given ... have the OEM give you their input. Lots of way to make up good large numbers and letters that can be seen for a great distance and do not distrupt the air flow over the water radiator, various oil coolers and that nowadays very important turbo intercooler. Don't forget the large markings on the roof or hose bed cover. (if you have one) HB of CJ (old coot) Respectfully to all here. My own opinions only. Thank you.

    Scooby14B,

We've been wrapping our grills to get the American flag on them. Don't see why you can't do the same thing to get a number. It cost about $125 for the wrap from a local sign company.

Can't get a picture to upload. This is a picture of the Smeal engine we put in service in December.

Just to clarify, we had the grill wrapped after the engine was delivered. Smeal didn't do it.

    Buff,

How quickly you forget about the "good" part of the county. I am sure your dad can provide directions. (LOL)
