    Default Newport News

If anyone is interested City of Newport News Fire / Ems is going to do another hiring. The like is here NNFD.org. We run both fire and medic. Pay isnt the highest around the area but we do have a better retirement and benifit package. The process should start in June / July.

    Question

What's the job like there? How is morale? Are the units busy?

    Thanks,
    Drew

The job is great. As far as moral, well like any place there are the few that bring it down. But the younger guys, more us that crowd, make it fun. There are 10 stations covering 64 sq miles. Almost 230,000 ppl reside in the city. As far as busy? Well, if you are on the medic there are very busy and busy. When the busier medics start running then the slower ones get hammered. Plus it is summer in the city and seems to be that is when we pick up most of the calls. The city is very diverse. There are country sides, malls, ghettos, nice areas, older areas, downtown, a ship yard, 2 hosp., a interstate, bridge tunnel, airport, and alot of other things that can bring the place down if it decides to go to hell in a hand bag.

I lived in Hampton, VA while in the service and spent a lot of time in NNSY. Had I not gotten a job in my hometown, I would have gone to VA again working for Norfolk or Newport News. Never had a problem there, but it is a lot like Sweetpea stated too. It is quite the area around Hampton Roads and there is a lot to do.

Darn it...now I have to listen to Tommy and Rumble again..

Does everyone rotate from ambulance to apparatus? I noticed EMT-P training was part of the academy. Are most of the personnel medics? Is Virginia a "right to work" state? If it is, does this effect the department at all.

    Thank You
