I'm on their email notice list...and don't think they are, but what a dream job that would be!

Neither their website nor the HR dept. states that they are currently hiring.

I lived in Honolulu for 3 years and know a little about the dept. Last I knew that an exchange program where you could go work on Maui or another Island.

In the mid 90's a two bedroom apt ran me $1350 monthly. It is a great place to live but I can assure you will be working two or three jobs to get by.

Only an EMT job listed there now. As said before, good luck living there.

In the past, I believe you had to be a resident of Hawaii to apply. While I lived there, they offered the test ZERO times. You might want to look at the Federal Fire Department there that protects the immense military complex across Oahu and the outer islands.

Wow, for the EMT position you start at about $3000/month. So with about $36000/year, you spend over 1/3 of it just on rent alone.

The rents are a lot higher now. Each island is itís own county, conducting their own testing. Locals get a big time advantage. You will rack up mucho frequent flyer miles trying to complete the process. Itís designed that way.

Last test was thrown out because locals werenít given enough information on the testing process. How would you have wanted to be on a list after going over several times and have it thrown out.

Pay doesnít even begin to cover your costs. Kauai firefighters arenít even EMTís. I know medics that worked for AMR, became firefighters and went back to AMR for better pay and benefits. If youíre an AMR medic you can transfer over at state side pay.

Paradise? Hardly. As someone mentioned you wonít see many green flash sunsets because you will be working 2 or more jobs just to survive. Many on the islands are realtors, massage therapists, and parking valet attendents all rolled into one. Kaui has 3,200 realators for a population of 42,000.

The most popular destination for Hawaiians is, yes you guessed it, Las Vegas! Aloha Airlines (they give discounts to locals) flys into Oakland everyday. The plane then makes a round trip to Las Vegas before flying back the next day. They probably do the same thing through Los Angeles.

    What a country!
