I took the PFT course in 2003 here in Portland, OR. We were getting our H&W program up and running. Started with 13 PFT's, now 4 years later we dropped or resigned 5 and got 3 others. The success has been varied, from 1:1 training with FF to lowback injury prevention, exercise handouts given out to stations, working out recruits. The majority of our money has come thru grants to outfit all stations with the same equipment: treadmill, elliptical, adjustable bench, 5-50# db rack. The key is the buy in from the dept/city. Creating trainers within departments is a great idea, but I still feel most exercise programs promoted here aren't enough. We need to look at training for firefighters in a completely different way, getting away from isolation and bodybuilding techniques.
Out of pure frustration at the lack of understanding within the fitness industry, I've developed my own firefighter fitness certification program based on my workout principles and 22 years as a New York City firefighter and trainer.
Depending upon your situation, the idea is to create some certified trainers within each department that can execute the program, as well as possibly create more trainers.
Anybody interested in this type of training should read my article: Fast Track to Fitness to give you an idea of some of the differences.

Capt Mike,
what isyour website again?
DeputyMarshal I honestly didn't know what it was otherwise I would not have asked. Callaway thanks for the info.
I just completed the program last year. Worth every penny and minute spent. This is a no B.S. program from firefighters to firefighters. Instuctors were awesome.
I work with exercise, conditioning and weight management for a living. This program rocks. They want you to start reading 3 months prior to taking the class, DO IT. Doing it for a living,:) I know it all:) , so I figured I could review a little and breeze through for the cert. WRONG. I was up studying my balls off to catch up. Anyone can do it, you don't have to be the "gym guy". Just make sure you prepare and study
Take the time prepare, pay attention in class and enjoy.. They were 100% to the point, accurate and up to date with all data and answers to questions.
DO IT!
