A firefighter fell from a rooftop while tackling a blaze apparently caused by a burning cigarette and died.

The 23-year-old firefighter, Daniel Pujdak, of Queens, had climbed up a ladder and was preparing to cut a hole in the four-story building's roof to vent the smoke when he fell Thursday evening. He screamed while he tumbled to the ground, witnesses said.

He suffered serious head injuries, the fire department said, and he was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The fire, confined to a window area, was reported shortly before 5 p.m. at a brick building used by artists in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, the fire department said.

"The window sills were burning," fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said. "That was the extent of the fire, we later learned."

More than 60 firefighters from 12 units were at the building, which was erected in 1920. No other injuries were reported.

Fire marshals believe the blaze was caused by a lit cigarette left near a window, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

The mayor met with Pujdak's family.

"As you would expect," he said, "they are devastated."
    Rest in peace Daniel.

My thoughts go out to the family of this ff and to FDNY. It sure has been a depressing week. Please keep the thoughts of all of our lost brothers in your minds this week and weeks to come.

Once again we mourn as a service as another brother of the service has made the ultimate sacrifice. From the members of Marlboro VFD, both career, volunteer and associate we extend our deepest sympathy to the friends, family and the New York Fire Department on the loss of Daniel F. Pujdak of Ladder Company 146.
