(Brooklyn - WABC, June 21, 2007) - An FDNY firefighter was rushed to Bellevue Hospital Thursday afternoon with serious head injuries suffered while battling a blaze in Brooklyn.

Officials say he is in critical condition.
The man was battling a blaze at 146 Leonard Street in the East Williamsburg section. The fire was reported on the fourth floor.

The "all hands" fire is still being fought by 60 firefighters from 12 units.

The circumstances and extent of the firefighter's injuries are not known.

Fire Department spokeswoman Eileen Ramos said name and condition of the firefighter are not being released until his family is told first.

    (Copyright 2007 WABC-TV)
WABC is reporting he jumped or fell out of the 4th floor window, WNBC is reporting he fell out of the TL bucket. Either way, the only thing being reported now is that he is in extremely critical condition.

    Firefighter Killed Battling Brooklyn Blaze

    June 21, 2007

A 23-year-old firefighter from Ladder 146 died this afternoon after he fell several floors while battling a blaze in Brooklyn.

The fire broke out just before 5 p.m. at four-story building on Meserole Street in Williamsburg and took over an hour to extinguish.

The firefighter, whose name has not been released, was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said the firefighter fell while trying to climb out of the bucket into the fourth-floor window.

The Queens resident had been on the job for two years.

Fire officials say the fire was caused by a cigarette.
