    Default LEL of Methane....

I am looking to get the info on this. As in what current standards are? Who/What determined them, etc...

I know its 5% but I need to know who "set it" at that...

    Post websites or data...

    Who set it?

    G_d.

LEL is a physical property of a gas. Nobody "sets it", it just is.

I know.....I need to prove to some non-fire related techo weenies where the standard came from.....how it was determined, and by whom.

I am working with people that need to know everything. You know the ones that sit behind a big wooden deck questioning everything!!

LEL and UEL aren't "standards". They are physical chemical properties measured in a laboratory and published in any number of standard reference texts.

If you set out to "where the standard came from" you aren't going to find anything.

What labs? UL Labs? Or a college lab? They (the people behind the desk) understand the chemical properties part. They need to know the WHO part....

Sounds like you have some real winners on your hands. Do they also keep asking why the sky is blue?

LEL of combustables is published in the Merck Index and any other number of standard reference books. It does not matter which lab determined the value-it is what it is.

    WaterbryVTfire,
Short of filling their office with methane to demonstrate the mixing of air and methane , try going to CHRIS Manual on line at:
    www.chrismanual.com
or you can order the NIOSH Pocket Guide on CD free from NIOSH on their web site.
Although it sounds like a visual aid might help these meat heads with their cranial-rectal inversion.
    Good luck.

That is why I like the Merck Index, 2500 pages to help dislodge a cranium from a rectum. Apply as often as needed.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Besides G*d, these weenies need a bit more to get it through their skulls. Thanks for the Merck heads up.
And I used the G*d reference this morning, and I thought my tech assistant was going to need surgery after busting a gut!!!

Just be careful that they don't come away thinking that the LEL is "set" by Merck (et al) rather than just published by Merck (et al).

If they still don't get it, try explaining that LEL & UEL are just physical properties like the freezing or boiling points of water: Nobody "set" them at 32F & 212F that's just what we observe them to be.
