At least five. One for IC, two for attack and two for RIT.

Don't forget the junior guys on the ambulance for EMS standby.

And then the department safety officer, as well as district/battalion chief.

Depending upon the size of the lightbulb, the division chief and possible the Chief of Department might be necessary.

When the media shows up, the Public Information Officer will need to be involved as well.

And if we use Boonedock's theory and use a 45 footer, we are up to about 3 more firefighters.

Aw dammit. Strike a second alarm.

Don't forget the cops who have to provide crowd/ traffic control.

And the power company who must come out and shut off the power.

And then the Fire Investigator who must figure out why the light went out,(isn't Thomas Edison's first bulb STILL BURNING???)

And then the Explores standing around trying to look good.

    And then who's handling rehab?

    Lets see and count:

1 Inspector to make sure the light bulb meets standards and draw up a preplan
1 Training Officer to make sure we are checked off on light bulbs
5 Union Reps to argue if changing the bulb is in our job description
1 Dispatcher to tell us to chance the bulb
1 IC to tell us which way to turn the bulb
1 Firefighter on utility duty to make sure all power is disconnected
1 Firefighter from the Truck to set up and hold the ladder
1 Firefighter from the Truck to climb up the ladder to change the bulb.
1 Firefighter from the Engine to have a charged safety line
1 Firefighter form the Engine to pump to the safety line
2 Remaining Truckies to climb up the roof to make sure there are no hidden fires that caused the bulb to short out in the first place.
2 Remaining Engine Guys to be RIT
1 Safety officer to make sure the truckies don't fall from the roof and ladder
    1 Media Liason
2 Standby Medics in case somebody gets shocked or falls down
3 Crusties sitting around the station talking about how they had to fight fire before electricity was even invented
1 Junior in full turnout gear hoping he will get to see some action
1 NFPA rep trying to change the standard on light bulbs
1 Taxpayer complaining that we are waisting his money because we buy expensive light bulbs
7 Media guys filing a "Freedom of Information" request to see when the bulb was inspected last
2 Guys performing a left handed search through the station because nobody actually has the replacement bulb

    That brings my total to:

    37

    Talking Hey Marcus!...............

Only one person on Utility Duty?? Can that individual operate the complicated "Lock Out, Tag Out" procedures alone?? What does NFPA,IAFC,IAFF,AM, & FM say about this??

I was hoping that Utility would simply turn off the switch, but he might just try to pull the meter outside the station...

Any Uk firefighter would easily change a lightbulb. What would prevent them from doing so is the risk assessment required, as well as the written policy on whos responsibility it is to a) report the lighbulb as being defective, b) the stores request (in duplicate) for the replacement lighbulb, not forgetting the defective lightbulb as evidence that a new one is actually needed, c) the directive from an officer to change the bulb, d) the scaffolding (no ladders in this brigade then), in order to safely ascend to the level of the light fitting and the required trained and certification with which to operate said equipment.

By which time it will be British Summer Time and we won't need the lights on anyway
