I was checking out photos from a link that FFFred posted and saw this picture. What exactly is this card used for?

Well...........
I'm not from NY, but that is a common thing in public transit. Usually called a "Pass" it entitles the bearer to free passage on the New York transit System. There are other cities that do the same thing.

For some reason the picture wont load, but I dont have any idea what is being talked about. We dont ride free unless we have our bunker gear with us (ie, getting detailed to another house).

The card is issued to Fire,EMS, and NYPD units. Some subway stations are unmanned. This card let's us respond to and emergency though the gate.

Its called a MetroCard. The MTA will offer discounts or in some cases a free ride on subways, Long Island Rail Road and Metro North to students, municipal workers and first responders.

On a sorta related note...3 friends and me were in NYC and had just visited the WTC site and were hopping a subway back to the airport and as we were about to scan our metro cards a subway employee noticed our FD t-shirts and swiped us in with her card and said ff's don't pay to ride from ground zero or something to that effect. We thought that was very cool....just wanted to share and see if anyone had any similar experiences.
