    Default SAFD or HFD

Need some help. If you had to pick between San Antonio FD and Houston FD, who and how would you pick? If anybody works or knows about SAFD, give me some insight on the department. Same with Houston. Which is the better department?

From my experience, there are A LOT more attractive women in San Antonio...for what it's worth at least!!

    FD wise, no clue!!

I have a good chance to get offers from both departments. On top of that, they're starting their academies at the same time. If it comes down to making a decision, I don't know who to pick

From the way some talk I would guess that because Houston has more people and seems to me more of a **** hole than San Antonio that HFD probably fights more fire which is a very good thing. **** holes are nice to work at as long as you don't have to live in one.

Whichever one is larger and has more oppurtunity to promote. Go big or go home.

Apply to both. You're more likely to get hired in Houston. They just gave another eo test and will probably make around a hundred or so, which will leave a new pipeman gap.

I'm not sure how much is considered "not ****e," but paramedic pipemen make less than Sr. Captains. I think my salary is halfway decent.

What is starting pay in both cities?

What is the work schedule in both cities?

How many years do you have to put in for retirement at both cities?

Wow that is horrible pay. However I do not know what the cost of living is like out there either.

Grab a piece of blank paper and write down the pros and cons of each department.

So it looks like SAFD pays more, but money ain't everything. If you are seeing more fire then it does make up for some lost money.

Houston: four shifts, 24 hours each: ABABCDCD + a debit day that the city claims we owe them about every 28 days. My debit is coming up day after tomorrow, then I have an OT and I'm back to my shift, again.

No, our pay up front ain't great. No one beats our retiremtent, though. In spite of the debit day, our schedule ain't too bad, either. We got a fella from SA works for HFD. It's a good department, and the lack of respect from the city sort of unites us in a warm fuzzy common enemy. There's still plenty of infighting, so don't think you'll get bored complaining about the city all the time. There is always the Dshift to gang up on.
