DUMFRIES, Va. -- A tanker truck was punctured by construction equipment Thursday afternoon, leading to a major tar spill in Prince William County.
The incident happened at about 12:30 p.m. along Possum Point Road near Route 1. A truck towing a piece of construction equipment lost its load, which punctured the tanker. The tanker was either heading to or leaving a nearby asphalt plant.

Tar leaked onto the road and possibly into a nearby drainage area.
Hazardous materials crews were called to the scene to contain the spill and assess any damage to the environment.
A second tanker from the asphalt company was called in to attempt to reclaim the remaining tar from the ruptured tanker.
