It is with deep regret that I share that firefighter Darren Johnsen, 36, of the Rice Lake Volunteer Fire Department (Minnesota) took his own life on July 13th.
I served with Rice Lake for three years, and Darren was a longtime volunteer, having joined soon after he completed High School. Darren was an aggressive member, very heads up and on top of his game, I would have followed him into just about anything. He rose as far as Assistant Chief, but in the past few years had given up the white hat in order to free time up for his other interests: family and the outdoors.
As yet no one knows why Darren made this choice, whether it might be related to the job or his personal life.
He is survived by his wife, son, mother and brother.
RIP, Darren.
