I was hired at 21, I was lucky I got hired the first time iI took the test for the paid dept(i studied my butt off and practiced interviews for a long time and got my self ready for the agility test). I have been a volunteer since 18. My older brother tested 4 times before he was hired. He is 3 years older than me but he is the new probie.

Hired onto my first professional department and became a member of the IAFF at 20. I've been on for 8 years now. It took me three tries to get on, wrote the test at 18, 19, and was successful at 20.

18 yrs old with the vollies and joined the career/IAFF at the ripe old age of 34. Our neighboring town was the only career in the county and they had a rule that you had to live in the city limits. I was NOT going to move to the city but I applied to see where I stood with some of the young ones and past the written and finished 1st in the agility test. The city then made a rule that you had to live no further than the adjoining county. So I gave up a union bricklayer job (and about $15,000) to become a paid firefighter for the past 5 years.
