Visiting the Big Apple

A friend and I will be visiting NYC in October. Should be a great time as we have alot og things planed for the trip. On our down time we would like to maybe visit some fire houses. My question is which ones are best to go to? Are some more friendly, I don't want to go to a house that doesn't care to have visitors. I guess what I'm trying to say is we don't want to step on anyones toes. Any info you have would be great.
