Due to my foot injury from a 1997 traffic accident, my role in my department is one of a support/light duty role that includes helping out with fundraisers and other departmental functions, researching information I believe would be of use to my chief and other line officers of the active portion of the department. Best of all I enjoy helping out in anyway even if I cannot fight fires. It would seem to me that a support role in any fire department would be just as much a part of the fire service as the active duty people are. It's my way of giving my department the best gift I can think of for being there when I needed them; the gift that keeps on giving- my time and services. What better gift is there that one can give a volunteer department?
