I've seen similar things. We have had fires where you had to walk between stacks of newspapers. I have seen fires where we had had to climb over stuff just to get into the fire room.

I've seen it many times, it makes a sort of sense. If a person doesn't have very good house keeping skills and lives like a pig, fire prevention in the house and health of the resident is most likely a low priority.
I've had a few med calls where there is just a walkway of about 18 inches in the hallways and the trash is banked up against the walls past the waist, we had our ALS intercept from the town over responding and he had on shorts and sandals, was the last time I saw him respond dressed like that.

Beer cans, no.
Newspapers, yes. Also birdcages. And one lady who must have had 2000 egg cartons blocking the door between her kitchen and living room.
