I am a United Methodist local pastor and am working towards an mdiv right now. I have joined a local vol. dept. How do I get more info about the fire chaplaincy? Are there full-time positions in larger departments? Is there a chaplain candidate program, kinda like the military chaplain candidate programs?
Thanks.

Check out the Fellowship of Christian Firefighters (FCFF). My father-in-law is a Fire Chaplain in the St. Louis area. (He's a Baptist deacon.) It's a non-paid, volunteer position but I believe some larger departments may have paid chaplains. Most I've heard of volunteer, tho. The FCFF should be able to answer most of your fire chaplain related questions. They're a good group of guys.

The world is your oyster. Many departments would probably love to have a Chaplain. Few have them. I strongly suggest that you check out The Federation of Fire Chaplains. They offer training nationally. Most paid Chaplains that I know came through the ranks as Fire Fighters The main advice that I have for you is to learn that the Fire Chaplain's job is to "Come Along Side" these workers and not to preach at them.
