Default Steel Toes/shorts around the Hall/EMS???

I am wondering how many departments must wear safety toes etc around the hall, for PT and EMS calls. I noticed Phoenix Fire can wear their optional uniform(shorts, t-shirts, PT shoes) around the hall and for EMS. How many departments do this? I have heard of a study done by Phoenix and FDNY talking about reduced heat stress with shorts under turnout gear. Does anyone know how I could get ahold of one of these reports? Thanks, we are trying for some positive changes.

Steel toed shoes/boots aren't mandatory in my department, but I wear them anyway. Shorts are allowed on duty in season, in or out of the station except while mowing or trimming the yard (insurance carrier requirement).

My vol. dept bought us steel toe duty boots for when we work part time. It is our option of what we want to wear but they bought us steel toe. I wear the Matterhorn USAR boots and I love them.

    Post Nope..........

Not to nit-pick, but you should refine your poll to have the option "Not Required" in order to get a better picture. We don't require them, and I don't know of any department that does, here in the Mid-Atlantic area. I have a couple of pair, and I use them sometimes when appropriate.

We are not required to wear them at all. Most of the tech team guys wear them for tech training and calls. Especially trench and confined space.

None required here. Just black, "work style" hard sole shoes or boots.

Back in 1980 something we bought everyone steel toed low quarters and most wore them. They were the offical duty shoe. Most complained how heavy they were. I still have a new pair, worn a few times. My feet never took to them.

Upadate: The career department I'm starting with tomorrow requires steel toe duty boots. They give you $150 towards the purchase. I ordered a pair of Danner Acadia's Steel Toe and had to pay the extra $100. I loved my old danner acadia's but I've never had the steel toe's before.
