wow i could understand what you said just fine, don't listen to the yankee with the comment above this. A lot of fire departments that have poles don't use them anymore, of course some do when it's not very quick to get to stairs, but i haven't heard of explorers using them. try looking at a playground.

we have a pole and a slide at my station. I've never used the pole, but I used the slide a few times.

If the FF's can't use the poles, no explorer should either. If in the few places out there with a pole, an explorer isn't critical for a fire response....take the stairs.
I like the playground suggestion best.

Well my local department (which I happen to be an explorer with) has one pole... that was moved because it is not needed any more. Now a department next to mine has many poles! ranging from a 1 story pole to a 3 story pole. Though I don't know if the explorers are allowed to use them if they ride along.
(I have seen the three story pole.)

I've seen a three story pole before. It's in an haunted, old, closed firehouse in Pittsburgh... Troy Hill Engine 39's. It closed in 2005(I believe) and it's now 106 years old... so much history in there... anyways. They only used the one-story pole at the point because they only untilized the basement, first, and second floors. The only reason they were ever on the third floor was for cleaning and tours. I was on the roof of it before... sweet view when there's fireworks in downtown on the river.

poles can be dangerous, here in some stations, they are forbidden.
"sauver ou périr"
"courage et dévouement"
2 french mottoes in french fire service.

Running down stairs can be just as dangerous, if not more.

Came up in a single story station. Man, I always wanted to respond just once down a pole. That, and to drive a Tiller. Oh well, maybe I'll settle for the fact that I can use the "spellcheck".
