How did you know you wanted to be a firefighter?

Related to my other thread, I'm curious to know how you guys "knew" you wanted to be firefighters, what made it "click" that that's what you wanted to spend your life doing? For those who your parents are FFs, then that's an obvious answer, but what about those who's parents aren't, what is it that made you decide on this job?

When I realized my superhuman strength, amazing eyesight and hearing, and an amazing ability to learn about fires by watching a woodpile burn were being wasted in my previous job.

Go down to your local department and ask all of these questions. By the way make sure your health insurance is paid up when you go.

And yes Im buying. Ya gotta drive to NY though, Im getting married tomorrow, dont think the wife to be would like a last minute road trip out there!

When I was little we lived next door to my towns Chief. I was outside one day when I was 10 or 11 and he came out to get in his car for a fire. He asked if I wanted to tag along.

Long story short, it was quite the fire and I had a front row seat as they made a rescue on an old lady that was still inside. Afterwards we went to the firehouse and he introduced me to the Brothers. He told them (jokingly) that I had helped him run the fire. They were the coolest people I had met (to that point anyway), said I had done a great job for my first fire. They took time out from their clean-up to show me the rigs. It had quite the impact on this wee lad.

I was hooked for good.

When I heard there was no cooked meat at the firehouse. With it being so deadly, I new they were watching out for my well being and that's where I belong.

We grew up in a cardboard box beside a hole in the road, one day it caught fire.

Some years later I bought a house next door to a Fire Station.

They cooked meat, I like meat.

None of them thought they were SupraDupraMan. I liked that.

My Father was a Policeman. So joining the Fire Brigade was obvious.

I just think it would be cool to play hero for a year or two, then do something else. In my spare time I like making wood pile fires and pretending I can learn how a back draft occurs by watching a log burning.
