    Default Consultants?

Hello everyone! I've been reading this site for a while...But I had a question...

I was wondering if perhaps we had any fire safety consultants who could possibly share the steps they took in obtaining their position?

It's my understanding that you will need (at the most basic level) a Certified Fire Inspector I cert and a Certified Fire Inspector II cert. As well as becoming a Certified Fire Protection Specialist with NFPA.

From that point, there seems to be a few routes...at least this is some of what I've been told....This could of course all be wrong. That's why I'm here to ask questions and hopefully receive some answers.

The first way is what I had assumed from the beginning and that is to work for the fire department as a firefighter for several years. I have heard that many of the positions as a "fire safety consultant" are being done by men and women with well established careers within the fire service. This is understandable.

Another way (I have been told) would be to find a position within an insurance company that employs fire claims adjusters. Work with them for a period of time to gain experience and build your resume.

The last way I've heard about is to work for a company that works with insurance companies, by inspecting buildings for fire safety violations. These are apparently smaller, independently owned, companies who may be more willing to hire those of us with less experience. This seems very close to the above mentioned job with an insurance company.

If there are any members here who would be willing to share their experience's and even how they got there, I would be very grateful!

I should probably share a little background about myself...

I'm currently working as an EMT for an ambulance company. I finished my FF-1 academy and I have finished my associates in Fire Science. I decided to stay in school and finish my BS in Fire Protection Administration and Technology. So far, so good, in school and work...Anyway, I'm hoping that I can get some more information about becoming a Fire Safety Consultant, because after talking with my neighbor who's an architect, it sounds like a career that would offer good financial stability to help support my family. I also just want to say thanks in advance for any information you guys can offer me!

By fire safety consultant are you referring to a fire inspector position with a department? Or more of a private company? Cuz i know a lot of departments that have volunteer fire inspectors, which would prolly be one of the easiest ways to getting into a paid position as one.

It definitely seems to be through private companies. It seems like it has more to do with fire engineering...But I'll have to check into Fire Inspector positions as I am sure it would be great experience.
