Thumbs up Thank You, Mr. President..........

I'm somewhat suprised that no one has commented on President Bush's Attendence and Participation at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Services last weekend. No President has, to the best of my recollection, spent so much time, and been so involved as Mr. Bush. Watching closely, I could see that on a couple of occasions, the President was close to tears. In this day and time, and as cynical as I am, I have to say that the President was moved by all that he saw and heard at Emmitsburg. I haven't been a Bush fan, for other reasons, But I appreciate the President's efforts this past weekend. Thank You, Mr. President.

I commented on it in the WBC protest thread but it got lost among all the other traffic. This thread is probably a better place for it.

Mostly. I was a bit surprised to hear one of the commentator's who opened the webcast refering to the symbol of the fire service: the maltese falcon.

Other than that, it did appear to go smoothly.

N.B. I'm not a big Dubya fan but I have to give him credit for personally meeting and chatting individually with each and every family member present when the names of the fallen were read off and flags were presented. Well done, Mr. President.

    "sauver ou périr"

    "courage et dévouement"

2 french mottoes in french fire service.

Camp David is so close to Emmitsburg, I am surprised this is the first time a President has shown up. It should be a given that who ever the President is, that he will be there.

Actually this was his second visit. his first visit was 2001 just weeks after 9/11,and like him or not, his visit and comments were heartwarming for all that were in attendance. I was extremly impressed that he personnaly met with each family.

there's a video of his speech at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21181226/

And the White House is only 70 miles away. Not to mention there is a helipad at the NFA.

He showed up for the second time during his term, which is twice more than any other president. Good Job W.

    Yeah, Geesh.

We all know its the Millenium Falcon.

    But seriously folks...

I think it is taken for granted that a President/Prime Minister/Head of State/etc would attend these types of ceremony, and their absence is far more news than their attendance.

But I agree that it is nice to see the support, and the recognition should be given where due.

Or they take the time to complain about the "disruption" of airspace as I noted in a post the other day on another forum page... That made more news then the President honoring lost FF's!!

Was glad to see President Bush at the NFA again. Great turnout this year.

President Bush actually landed at a different location then that front helipad at the NFA.

Speaking with Nan, the wife of Hector Sandy McClune, who we accompanied down to Emmitsburg, she said he gave the biggest hugs and his genuine concern and sympathy for the families was pretty cool.

I only was able to listen to a little bit of his speech as I made sure to stick around the area of the honor guard reformation after the first pass. But what I heard and read today was nice, completely where it needed to be with the focus on the fallen and their families.
