At least in the past 4 or 5 years. A similar incident took place in Sooke (20 miles west of Victoria) in 2003.
CAMBRIDGE, Md. -- A Maryland man has been accused of making a hoax call about a boat in distress on the Chesapeake Bay.
The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office said the county 911 center received the call late Wednesday night. The caller said he was on a boat taking on water near the Narrows Ferry Bridge. Police said the man also transmitted the same information on a VHF radio.
Police, the Coast Guard and firefighters responded to the area, but a Coast Guard helicopter was able to track the radio signal to Chapel Cove Marina in Taylors Island. That's where police arrested Brandon Maxwell, 19.
Maxwell is charged with making a false radio transmission of an emergency and reckless endangerment.

I have no details for the current story, however I was working with the Victoria Search & Rescue Coordination Centre when the 911 call through a cell phone and VHS radio came in for the older story. The report was of a small boat lost in fog somewhere off Race Rocks. Multiple resources were sent out for a search of roughly three hours when a second phone call came in from a secondary source. Turned out to be a neighbour to the person who placed the orginal 911 call, reporting that he could hear his neighbours voice coming from his boat, parked on the trailer in the front yard!
Needless to say, Sooke RCMP dropped by for an interview......

Yeah, I think I remember you mentioning that incident before. I meant to look for the article for the rescue but I kind of got side tracked.

People that use marine VHF to make fake distress calls and those that use VHF like it was a CB radio, tying up the bridge to bridge and distress/calling channels just irritate me no end.
We towboaters have enough trouble chasing down small boats that left their dock without enough fuel onboard for the day's outing without having to listen to someone call for help and start that way to learn that they were pulling a prank.
Yes,as someone asked, there will be a bill for this.Guy I knew played like he'd fallen overboard from a fuel dock at Memphis and floated down to Helena Ark(during King Biscuit Blues Festival,no less) got the bill from the US Coast Guard,Desoto County(Ms)SAR,and various other towboat companies for the fuel they burned looking for him.
Grownups really should know better.
