Just wondering...
Has anybody ever tried to develop a DOT approved brain bucket shaped like a fire service helmet, for those with motorcycles?

Wow!! You have to buy your helmet. Our department issues standard helmets and everyone is required to wear the standard helmet, no deviations. And Chiefs get white, Captains are red, Fire Fighters are black, Safety Officer is Green.

Not so sure that would be a good idea: one of the major injuries and causes of death in motorcycle MVC's is broken necks ( I had a cousin die in this manner) from getting lawn darted over the bars...and I would think that a lid shaped like a fire helmet with the rear brim would add even more leverage and cause even more such injuries, and thus would not allow DOT approval...just my thoughts.

Congrats, hope you enjoy it, although I think $320 is a tad much to spend on a used helmet when you could've bought a brand new one for not much more. Especially considering it's a modern Houston and is no different than one that rolls off the line tomorrow. The Houstons are heavy and sit high up on your head thanks to the impact cap and suspension system the NFPA demands they cram in there.
Give me an old school NY'er without all that crap, then we're talking!
But in any case, have fun with it, any leather is better than wearing Tupperwear on your head.

I see, so you don't have standards on equipment? I only ask as We got those goofy cairns 1010 helmets. We had nice light streamlined Bullards. Some young knucklehead went out on his own and bought one of those big clumsy ugly looking things and convinced the chief we should all wear them. Instead of going forward we went backwards. I resisted but lost. But I think I will go out and buy my own lightweight better helmet. I hate that 1010.

Go ahead and open up the can of worms by telling us how you took a step backwards.
This should suit your fancy:

YUP!!! Those are more like it. The hats we got are nice for parades and stuff, but for actually doing the job I don't like them. And since I don't do parades, I've no need for the show.
When going interior I want something that is streamlined, I don't want a bunch of stuff sticking out that can get caught on something. I also want something lightweight and not as wide. I'm thinking about being maneuverable and able to slid through places without problems.

Personally I don't want benefits denied because I wasn't wearing a NFPA compliant helmet. This was the main factor I looked into before purchasing my leather. That's the question. N5A or N6A? Knowone at my department would notice but if something bad were to happen I am sure it would be checked.
