School Shooting: No injuries after shot fired
BRAZIL,Indiana — Police are investigating an apparent shooting at Van Buren Elementary School at 12:45 p.m. today.
A gunshot was fired through the cafeteria door, according to a press release from Clay Community Schools Corp.
No students or staff members were injured.
Parents are being allowed to pick up students ahead of regular dismissal time if they choose.
The building is secure, school officials said.
Police from numerous agencies are on the scene. All schools are under lockdown in Clay Community Schools.
There will be school tomorrow, the press release said. Parents who need more information can contact the school at 448-1362.
State police received the call about 12:54 p.m. to assist the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, which is heading up the investigation, said Sgt. Joe Watts of the Indiana State Police.
According to initial reports, no children were in the cafeteria at the time, he said. “We do know for sure there are no injuries,” Watts said.
The only vehicle seen in the area was a late model shiny black van, which was headed north from the school on Harmony Road; the van had no side windows. Two white males were in the van.
“We’re not sure if the shot came from there, but it was the only vehicle in the area at the time,” Watts said.
Police are searching for the van, which headed north on Harmony Road and “disappeared,” Watts said.
State police detectives were at the crime scene, as was the Clay County Sheriff’s Department.
All Vigo County schools were placed on Code Yellow as a precaution, said Superintendent Dan Tanoos. That means all school doors are locked and any children outside are taken back inside the school.
