I heard that the department was going to allow residents of the surrounding counties to Philadelphia to apply for the test. Does anyone know if this is true??

The test is open to anyone who wants to take it. However, according to the Civil Service rules and the city's Charter, you must be a verifiable resident of the City of Philadelphia for one (1) continuous period of 12 months prior to being hired, and not be over the age if 39 on the date of hire.

As hopeful as I am that the new mayor will push for a change of these policies, it is doubtful as it would need to go through City Council at least.

If you really want to get hired in Philly, as I'm sure the Philly guys will tell you, start your residency ASAP and prepare for the next test (probably Fall of 2009).

I figured it was still the same as before but I heard from like 5 different people that they were going to do away with it or change it, I guess I got excited.

Not a chance....The department has been in tremendous need of medics for several years but can't get enough applicants. The last class was only about 6 people. If they won't even grant them a temporary residency waiver (Move in when hired), I can't see them doing it for the fire side when they have more than enough applicants.....
