Exclamation Montgomery County Cancels Elite order

I found this story about Montgomery County canceling their order with Elite Fire Apparatus. Any comments?

This should be interesting. Another builder putting their body on a chassis ordered by another builder. Wait until the finger-pointing begins on a warranty item.......

The apparatus is well built from all the words I have heard. The problem is doubt in the company lasting financially in a manner that will allow them to complete the order and provide warranty work.

Did you miss this little section in the very first of the memo?

This week Montgomery County formally accepted the Elite prototype pumper. The delivered unit was found to be a well-constructed, high quality vehicle that was manufactured to MCFRS specifications.

The bidders to do the bodies will have complete chassis specs of the units on order. I truly believe that they will account for anything they don't like in the Elite developed chassis spec to make sure the chassis fits their need.

Spartan is also very easy to work with and will make changes as necessary to the chassis during production. I can't honestly see this being a very big deal.

Angry No Dealer In New Jersey

Elite Fire Apparatus no longer has a sales & service dealer here in Jersey, they parted ways a few months ago. Maybe the dealereship saw the problems that Elite was having paying there bills, it's sad because they built some real nice apparatus at a fair price !

    Default Who's next?

First, American LaFrance, now Elite. Who's next?

I know of 1 or 2 agencies that require financial statements and part of the bid process.

Could this have something to do with the lack of bonding? Was the FD afraid that Elite would go out of business half way throught the contract? maybe someone on the inside gave them some info on its financial health.

    Default Bonding

For years, our specs required both a bid bond and a performance bond.

Our purchasing agent just went to a seminar on government purchasing and he said the trend is away from requiring bid bonds.

Purchasing agent didn't answer "why?" but on our recent bid solicitation, the bid bond provision was removed. The performance bond was left in.

According to another source, the official word from Elite Fire Apparatus is that all employees are "laid off" until further notice, and they're not taking any further orders and the status of trucks which were in production are questionable at best. Sounds like another New Lexington.
