Hey BigD, I am out at Blue River's Academy now, and KCFD was generous to come and teach us their LAST class (large area search training) tomorrow. I will try and ask them to see if any of them, as those teaching will be higher ranking officers.

Wow, 4 on the list is pretty damn impressive. I had a word with some of the instructors yesterday, (all captains, and two BCs) they informed me they are looking at a start date of around Jan 7th...18 weeks, about 25 guys, must maintain a 75% grade average in fire stuff, and an 85% in EMT. That's about all the info I got.

Yes, that's awesome you made it. Eventually, I would like to work KCFD, I just wasn't old enough to apply the last go around. A coupla of the KCFD academy instructors are instructors at our academy, so we hear some pretty wild stories haha.

Yes, like I said, I'm not with KCFD, but do know a little about them, and am going through an Academy myself now (almost done).

First off, like AZFF said, eyes open, mouth shut. Also, LISTEN! Many of our guys think they know it all, or get too focused on the task before them while the instructor is telling them what to do. That leads to mistakes. Also, be prepared to study, as the pace is fast with fire and emt stuff. We had quizzes every day, and multiple tests. If we had a GPA below a 75% we were gone. If we were late three times, we were gone. If we didn't shave, we were sent home. Same if our uniforms were unkempt. Be prepared to address even the janitors as sir, and show respect 24/7.

Be prepared to work, HARD. Some days it felt like they were trying to break us, mentally and physically. But, now that we are almost done I couldn't be happier they did. Same goes for PT. They worked us hard, (our ex-military guys said it was just like boot camp). I hope you are in very good shape, and your cardio is in good condition.

On a good note, KCFD is a great department, runs tons of fire in certain areas, and the Academy when it's all said and done was a great experience. I really, really enjoyed it.

Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes.

Academy's are all the same. They try to break your body and spirit.
Take NOTHING personal. YES SIR, and do what they say.

I keep hearing the city anticipates hiring in January. Probably a smaller (15-30) class. As with anything involving city government, there are always variables. Be patient, sometimes there are unforseen or even forseen delays.

As for academy advice, I suggest getting into shape. The first 8 weeks are classroom work, with an hour of daily PT to prepare for the CPAT, which you are allowed to practice during those 8 weeks, but have only 1 chance to pass at the end of the 8 weeks. Then you'll be in the drill yard for the rest of academy, so get acclamated to the cold. If you use recreational drugs, you should probably quit now, because you will be drug tested before academy.

Otherwise, just show up on time. Best of luck.
