I was just wondering how prior experience in the armed forced would effect chances of being hired such as possibly having experience in HAZMAT or army medic. I hear the actual army firefighting is hard to get into.

About the only advantage to military experience is bonus points. At least in Illinois, I would have to add. By statute, you are to be awarded bonus points on the hiring process. Based on the specific department, you may also be awared points for being a paramedic or for other certifications. You may use such points for the initial hiring list, or you may save them for promotions. Of course, if you are only concerned with GETTING the job, why not use them at the beginning. The experience can also help you with points on your interview, as most fire and/or police commissions like to know that they are interviewing someone with practical knowledge.
