    Default Jury Duty Scam

This just came down from our Security Office in the Embassy, so its been looked over and veryfied:

    3. Jury Duty Scam/Arnaque aux jurés:
Filed on Monday, November 26, 2007 by Laurie Vogt.

    Jury Duty Scam:

This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below).

It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen. The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado. This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Unfortunately they did not provide the FBI link.....

Four years ago when I lived in Kentucky,I got a jury duty summons for here in Tennessee.Appearently, they didn't get the word when I registered to vote in Kentucky so I had to send a copy of my new driver's license(and I checked before sending it)to the jury duty office.
Here's the odd part:when I moved back to Memphis in December '05,I went to re-register to vote and was told that they had no record of me registering in other states.A couple days later,I got a jury duty summons again.
Dang, three duty notices and only being seated once. They must be really hard up for impartial jurors if they trust MY judgement.
But you have to wonder why they aren't communicating when someone registers to vote in another state or Commonwealth, thereby changing their residency in a most official manner.

While serving in the Navy in the 1980's, the local sheriff stopped by my parents to tell them that an arrest warrant had been issued for me because I had failed to appear for Jury duty.

Funny thing was, I was in the Indian Ocean at the time and had not seen mail for 3 weeks.

It got straightened out and the warrant dismissed before I ever found out about it. Never did get a copy of the initial summons.

I was kinda annoyed, was looking forward to having Idaho extradite me from Oman. Would have made the trip way more fun.
