Records
I know they are required by MIOSHA (Michigan). Contact your office for OSHA and see if what they say. Other than OSHA, I don't believe any other agency matters.
NFPA is only there as a guideline and unless your community or department adopts the standards then your not obligated to do anything through NFPA.Jim Shultz

Maintenance records
Although NFPA 1911 is a voluntary standard to be met, You have to realize that in the case of an accident or equipment failure, that very document will be waved in front of a jury and will be viewed with the reverence of the holy bible. The other folks who like to look at your maintenance records are the ISO when they come in to rank your department for the purpose of determing property owner insurance rates. The most important thing to do if you find a problem with a vehicle or piece of equipment, is to document and inform a superior.
Stay safe!

Ladder issues
Hey guys
On the vehicle maint subject, i am new to aerial apparatus and recently an engineer from another shift hit our light duty ladder on the bay doors. Since the incident (we are sure there have been more unreported)we have noticed the last fly bieng "sloppy" with excess movement. Our admin said it was fine "they do that", along with we don't have any money to do major maint. what sort of inspections or certifications are required for ladders? and what kind of schedule ?
Thanks ahead of time guys

Are fire trucks exempt from all DOT regs? State DOT and US DOT?
Even if exempt, if anything is being waved in front of a jury, I bet DOT regs will be too.

Aerial ladders should be tested every year. They should also be tested after experiencing the type of incident you described. If that aerial were to fail on a scene, the money you saved by not testing it is only a drop in the bucket compared to what you would pay out in a lawsuit.
