I live in a pretty rural area. Most depts are looking for fire fighter medics. Fire fighter EMT's at a minimum. Most people who get hired full time were on a call dept for a period of time. Fire science degree helps sometimes.

I am from a smaller dept and we will take anyone who is willing and wants to be a part then we will train them from there. We are one of the few depts left that do not have medical as part of our fire dept.

As far as patient care goes, there is no difference between the medic cert and the degree. The degree shows that you went to school a little longer, and got some general education classes. An associate's usually means some math, english, maybe history and your medic classes. A bachelor's, as far as I have read about programs, entails a full complement of GenEd classes, plus some advanced learning like management of an EMS operation, accounting classes, and so on.

As far as the voting goes, I voted that volunteering will improve chances at the department where I volunteer. Several of our hires, quite possibly a majority, over the past 5 years have been volunteers. Also, being a medic has helped in the past, but that's not to say we only hire medics.
The opinions I post to these forums do not represent any entity to which I am affiliated.

I would say it all depends on the hiring process of the said department.
