    Thanks, Queens, good looking out.

This stinks. If they get another 100 EMTs this feb that's the whole june class. If there is a june class, that is. Ugh.

Just to follow up if any of you have any interest, this is what recruitment and CID provided me. First off, if you want to be in EMS, call CID directly and give em your info. (FDNY recruitment lost my info twice somehow.) You'll get put in the provisional hiring list.

Right now they are hiring off an open civil service exam that was given some time ago, however they have almost exhausted all the names, so there is a chance people off the provisional list will be called in a few months, if and when they have another class (typically 4 a year, but who knows now).

On the other hand, for all you guys way back on the list, they are giving a EMT civil service exam again in june, and if you are NYS emts, then you could take this exam, work EMS for 1.5 years, take the next promotion to FF exam in roughly two years and get on in the next class after that.

Sorry guys, I was corrected. According to a friend, it will still take them a year plus to process the promoted EMTs, so they will not likely be in the hopefully upcoming june class.

I received my results for the FDNY EMT civil service "test" around October 10, 2008. The List is 6083 and my list number is 253. I haven't heard anything about getting hired by them however yet. So since you're saying the list has been almost exhausted, I'll be making a call to see how far they've gotten.

    Post defferals

everyone keeps talking about there only being 17 deferrals, but my number was 5xx im going into this class, n im not considered a deferral. i wasnt 21 yet so i had to wait. i didnt had to sign deferral papers or anything and am almost %100 positive that im not considered a deferral so you need to factor that in to the numbers

I was browsing around and found this. Was this gentlemen on disability or did he pass in the line of duty? They don't really explain it. Either way, my heart goes out....

    Default Clarity...

I just wanted to throw this out there and see what you guys have to say...

I read everyone's posts everyday and I think we can generally assume a few things.... But by all means let me know if you disagree....

-The Jan 09' class will be 100 people cause Bloomburg spent all the city's money on pregnant gagging porn and the RFK Bridge.
-In order to achieve this, they will likely send letters to candidates whose numbers max out around 1050 (or so).
-They will do this by determining who passed the initial run and continue to send letters to another batch of candidates and so on until the 100 seats are filled.

Now, I just have a few questions...

-Will there be more classes a year like there used to be because the academy was shortened or are they going to keep it at 2 classes a year?
-Do any of the exams expire? Will I have to take anything over again?
-Just because my name is RosieE63 does that necessarily mean I am a woman? Maybe my last name is Rose and its a nickname? What am I Lois Einhorn? It's Pat?

Add some more facts if you have any and questions and we can figure things out from there. I wanted to know what is not fact and what is? I am going to be in touch with an instructor from the academy this week and I thought you guys could provide me with a couple questions to ask him.

EMS is not having a january EMT TOPS class only a new Medic Basic class. They might put a class in around April to get guys out for the summer overtime slots. As said before EMS promo is FEB 26th. There is a large number of guys taking this exam. Its should not effect the summer class at all. EMS Promos, if we're(ems guys) lucky won't go in till Jan 2010 or July 2010. If you are not even a NYS EMT yet its gonna take a while. As long as yo have a plan and stick to it you will get what you want out of it. Getting your EMT cert takes 4-6 months. The you must apply with the FDNY and get placed on the provisional list. You can also apply with DCAS for civil service if they offer it at that time. It could take months or even over a year for them to call you. Once they call you begin processing. Physical, psych, medical, and the academy which is 3 months, very academically demanding and a whole lot of fun. If you pass everything you graduate, work, STAY IN SHAPE, STAY OUT OF TROUBLE, and wait for the next promo. Oh, and you must have civil service status to take the promo exam.

    July 2012--Hire from new exam

If they go with this pattern to hire 600 for the next 3 years
    600 candidates x 3.5 list numbers = 2450
get upto approx list #1050 for Jan 2009 class

Maybe they will reach list # 3,500 and thats if there is no hiring freeze

The NYPD canceled its Jan 2009 class and it was expected that the July 2009 would have 2000 but now the July 2009 and Jan 2010 class have been cut to 500-700. Just read it in the Chief newspaper.
No way will they only hire 600 in 3 years, the job retires about 600 a year. Even if they were trying to do a small attrition that wouldn't work. I would guess that they will probably hire between 400-600 every year.

It also usually takes about 3 names to get one viable candidate due to backgrounds, medicals, not interested anymore etc....

I'm not sure about the hiring freeze, but everyone took the test in Jan '07 then list 6019 was established by the end of that year. Its supposed to last till 2011. But who knows. things change. good luck and stay safe.

I don't know when the last hiring freeze was but this list was taken from test 6019 that was given in Jan. of 07 and the first class off that last went into the academy in July 08 and this list is supposed to last for four years. After which another test is supposed to be given, but if there is a hiring freeze then the time length of the list may be drawn out a little longer, i'm guessing until numbers off of list 6019 are hired for the equivalent of four years.

The list was not established till mid 2008, just before class 02-08 went in. That was why no one saw it in the chief till later.

People began receiving background investigation packets in January 2008. They went forward with the process, even without being officially on a civil service list. DCAS didn't establish list # 6019 until mid 2008. That's because a list MUST be established before hiring people off of it.

The following is an excerpt from the DCAS website:

The eligible list for Firefighter, Exam No. 6019 was made public on November 16, 2007 and final scores were mailed to candidates shortly afterward. On June 11, 2008, List 6019 was established for use by the Fire Department. It will remain in use for up to four years.

The last hiring freeze I remember was in the late 70s, maybe '79-'81.

List 6019 was established in July of 2008 and will expire in July of 2009. Most, if not all eligible list last only one year and can be extended annually up to three times. The hiring off list 3040 which was established in 1978 went into 1984 due to a two year hiring freeze and also a lawsuit by several women who did not make the list.

Keep in mind, if the city continues to hire off of 6019, even with only 50 per class, the clock is ticking. Should the list get frozen, attrition will continue and the headcount will shrink. Once the economy recovers, hiring will begin again in earnest. I'll let you figure out which scenario is better for you.

Hmmmmmmm , only 50 per class ? I guess the city wants an unlimited amount of OT for firefighters now after they hired so many to cut all OT the past few years. 50 per class????? I still see 6019 going over 4000 , even with all these bizarre rumors going around.

Don't misread me! I used 50 per class as an example, not an assumption.
