[QUOTE=NYCTruckie;934119]For the medical with the stair mill. You can't go over your max heart rate. What is your max? Subtract your age from 200. There you go.

What do you mean "Subtract your age from 200" is that beats per min? for example, If I was 21 that would be 200-21= 179 So that would mean my heart rate cant pass 179 beats per min?

    Exactly...

This morning's turnout at the rock stunned me. Couldn't have been more than 35 guys and that is including guys from the sunday class(s). I was a "re-setter" first so I got to see quite a few people run through the course. It was amazing to see how much the girls struggled with the set up. One kid threw up and quite a few failed or cut it close.

That said, there were plenty of guys that dominated the cpat and also tended to be some of the cooler people there. Knowing prospective firefighters and instructors ahead of the academy is gonna be a nice bonus for everyone who attends these classes.

My time today was 8:23 and I feel like sh1t about it. I know that I should be in the 7:30-7:45 range and will bust my *** this week(and doing my leg workout earlier in the week) to get there. How did everyone else do this week?

key thing to remember about the CPAT although all professional firefighters in NY have to pass it to get the blessing of the state, it is no where near an accurate measure of minimium physical abilities for a firefighter.

It definetly doesnt have to do with your investigator and invest packet because I called my investigator the other day to check if everything was squared away and he said he had no clew and wouldnt get to my packet in a couple of weeks and he was just only up to 300.

I think our numbers are getting bumped up also, because some people got military, legacy, residency credits that werent suppose to or filled out incorrectly, or didnt have the documentation, Get Ready boys/gals!
I know this happend to 2 guys in my prep class that were in it in the beginning.

At the rock, I saw a guy puke from doing the time trials also!!And I also saw a chick go through the search and come out the same way!!

Are you kidding? This "test" is barely an exertion.

Two part; it's good if you start seeing familiar faces during these times. More people to relate to and hang out with later down the road.
However, DO NOT get too chummy with the instructors. They are there to get a job done. Train you to do the job. Trust me, it could bite you later on. Most all of the instructors out at The Rock have 20+ years at the minimum. And there is not one I wouldn't follow down a hallway.

Do not beat yourself up over your CPAT time. Your's is pretty decent, but unlike the previous phyical, there is no extra points for less time. Yes, be in shape for the academy. Push yourself now for that, not for a better time.

    Good luck,

I guess that these are people that have never played a sport and/or are "in it for the t-shirt".

How would knowing the instructors, and them knowing you're a hard worker ahead of time possibly hurt you? I can't think of any reason why you'd not want them to know you're not a pussy.

Yeah, I guess I won't worry about my time so much as you guys suggest. I'll focus more on getting in ridiculously good shape for june.

To be honest with you the never played a sport is a bit over board statement. The reason people throw-up hen doing the cpat is because they either didn't prepare properly or they didn't prepare AT ALL. Of course playing a sport helps but training is the most important part.

    Because it's a cultural thing.
Just because you met them before Probie School started does not make you their friend or peer.

I think we're talking about two different things here though. It's fine to prove yourself. Your original message stated:

Maybe I'm just reading it out of context. I'm just saying be careful there. Don't become too familiar. It WILL be cracked down on in Probie School because someone WILL lose their bearing and address an instructor as if they've known them for years and it WILL get back to the DI's.

Just some friendly words of advice.

Yeah I must have come across wrong. I guess I meant knowing the guys that grind away the hours with you is a good thing, as is the Instructors seeing you doing just that. It would take a mighty special kind of person to have the balls to address one of the as a childhood friend or something.

I have to disagree with you there, i did this a minute ago on excel. I am in pretty good shape but am slightly worried about my heart rate if it is (200-age)x(.9). Unless i did something wrong, which is very possible, there is much more than a 1 bpm difference. Please feel free to correct me or shed any light on this. I know skyline said it was pretty easy if you were in decent shape.

Heart rate for the medical is 220-age x .9. The Lt. at the Rock has said this on more than one occasion when I've been there. I think we'd all be in trouble if it was age subtracted from 200.

    Default Heart Rate

Guys/Gals they use 220-age times .9 to get your max heart rate. Who ever said it was 200 I am almost positve is wrong. When I went to get my Medical I was told I could not go over 174 and that would only work with 220-age. So from that I deduce its 220. Hope they helps everyone. If they used 200 many more people would fail.

The numbers are almost identical using either method...

    It's either:

    200-age

    or

    220-age * .9

    NOT

    200-age * .9

    HR Age 90% HR
    220 21 0.9 179.1
    220 22 0.9 178.2
    220 23 0.9 177.3
    220 24 0.9 176.4
    220 25 0.9 175.5
    220 26 0.9 174.6
    220 27 0.9 173.7
    220 28 0.9 172.8
    220 29 0.9 171.9
    220 30 0.9 171
    220 31 0.9 170.1

    HR - Age
    200 21 179
    200 22 178
    200 23 177
    200 24 176
    200 25 175
    200 26 174
    200 27 173
    200 28 172
    200 29 171
    200 30 170
    200 31 169

There we go, that makes sense. Thanks for the info. I can definitely make it under 177, especially being I am not getting a call for medical until after the summer class goes in with my list being 17##.

I don't know where the .9 is coming from but when I took the test it was 200 - my age which was 32. The older you are the lower the heart rate maximum is. I was quite ****ed about that.

If a Lt. at the Rock is saying otherwise, well, I can't go against him. Things change all the time with the FD. BUT, if I was going to take the test I would be prepared for all possibilities. Train for the 200 number instead of the 220. Either way you will be very prepared!
