I believe both. The economy tanked during that time. The class went from 300 -> 150 -> 100 -> pulling the rug under those 100's feet.
    6019- was sitting at 13xx
    2000- now sitting at 18xx

So I guess its not a set number of FF's per house or for the city in general, which is weird, how can they truly need less heads than the year before, unless the city got smaller or people didn't retire as usual.

hey does anyone have the contact number or e-mail for the NY post reporter or daily news?? I'm having a major issue with DCAS trying to kick me off the special military list because if you don't get hired within a certain amount of time from being discharged you can be taken off the list. All my paperwork is straight and I was in the class of 80 or whatever that did the 1.5 run and got the letters of hiring in DEC and then taken away. Apparently theres a time limit on service to country and employment even though I would of been in the FDNY in the 04-05 time frame had I not been in the military. If anyone has the numbers or e-mails i'd really appreciate it. thanks

No. The special military list is for guys who took the test an then went into the military and got called while on active duty. They freeze your name on whatever list your on and when you get out they put you in the next class available even if the list you were on expired

    FDNY case undermines work ethic

By The Washington Times 7:10 p.m., Wednesday, January 26, 2011

Federal Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis and the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) Vulcan Society want minorities hired through a quota system instead of achieving the job on merit (“Justice Department undermines FDNY,” Comment & Analysis, Monday). The judge attributed the ruling to the fact that a slightly lower percentage of minorities passed the firefighting entrance exam.

According to a census in 2000, the total proportion of lawyers in New York City was 87 percent white and just 6 percent black. Does this mean the bar exam - the same one that Judge Garaufispassed - is discriminatory as well? How about medical school or professional sports leagues? Whatever happened to the idea that if you work hard, you can achieve your goals? The Vulcan Society and Judge Garaufis certainly are working hard to erase any type of honest work ethic.

So what if that list stays frozen because of the judge and they start to hire off a new list? do you have to start from scratch?

Your not supposed to start from scratch it's against veteran labor laws. Your supposed to go into the next class whenever it happens. If your on the list it means you should have been hired but you physically couldnt be there. I'm from list 2043 so list has nothing to do with it

I'm not EXACTLY sure what you mean, but, every company has a roster. The number for a truck is 25, for a 4 man engine, it's a minimum of 19. There have been no cuts to company staffing yet...but come Feb. 1st. it looks like the 60 engines with a 5th man on duty will be reduced to 4 like the rest of the city. This will bring the total number of necessary firemen down by 60 on every tour. This is purely a move to cut overtime and other expenses.

The city did, in fact, over hire. They hired at an incredibly fast pace right through 2008 and I'm sure they're glad they did. I bet they wish they'd pushed that previously canceled class through too. A couple of years ago, we were surplus as many as 150 a tour, making all engines full. Now, now they need to fill that many positions every tour with O/T.

    Question

Does anyone have any idea if the ruling that the judge gave (quota hiring)

is the final ruling. If not, one has to wonder if he is purposely dragging his feet

on this matter. Maybe City should appeal the quota proposal that he so badly

wants. He is after all causing some degree of financial hardship on the

    taxpayers of NYC. Any ideas?

    Default FDNY hiring age extension

For anyone asking about the FDNY hiring age extension: All information that is most recent is emailed out to the email list, if you want to be on it send an email to 6019AgeExtension@gmail.com and you will get all updates that way.

We need everyone to send a letter to their respective councilman for their district to gain support to make sure it passes. Email the age extension group at 6019ageExtension@gmail.com. They have a letter prepared that we can each send to our respective councilman to garner support for the age extension. There are 51 NYC council members and so far 28 have signed on as sponsors of the bill.

It means more when a resident of a councilman's district writes a letter. Write to either their district office or the legislative office. The best way is to personally go to their district office in your neighborhood and hand deliver the letter. You do not need to make an appointment. Just walk in and ask to speak to your councilman. If they are not there usually the chief of staff will be there to speak for them. This has worked BEST for me. I have already written to my councilman and he has signed on as a sponsor. Any responses that you receive from councilman should be posted on here and emailed to the age extension group.

To find out who your councilman is go to
    http://council.nyc.gov/html/members/members.shtml

Then request a copy of the already prepared letter from the age extension group and send it to your councilman.

You can view the age extension legislation here:
    http://legistar.council.nyc.gov/Legislation.aspx
Enter: (int 450) in the search engine and make sure to put 2010 as the year.

when did these people get promoted from ems to FF

When they do so do they have to pass the physical and go through the academy? I am just curious since I have heard some people complain about this process and was curious about the specifics.

They went through the exact same hiring process as the firefighters that were hired from the open competitive list. Same test, same class (class of 2008) ect.

As of the last test and thereafter, EMS promo's could no longer fail some of the events on the physical agility. Before 2008, FDNY gave their own PAT. Starting with 6019, it's now the CPAT, which has always been pass/fail anyway.

Just got the 6019 candidate update...Thanks again to all who are involved. You guys/girls really keep me reaching for my dream. Thanks you soo much.. My only worry about this new time line is the age extension. Will the city council vote and approve the age extension before the filing of the new test? This has to be a REAL concern with all of us who are above age. Do we have any info or timelines about the voting of the bill?Because of this, I am extremely excited and extremely nervous about this news.

I thought he meant this ems promo happned recently. Thats why I asked.

Did you people on the email list get an update email today?

If they are going to extend the age, it would be extremely backwards and sort of defeating the main point if they did so after the test.

    Angry

Could someone please explain what all that BS was from the special master.

What really needs to happen in for the City to appeal all this BS and start

hiring in rank order off List 6019. Too many guys spent a lot of time and

money (Lasik Procedure) to be fully qualified to be on List 6019.

I know we've discussed this before, but for the life of me, I cannot understand how the City has not taken SOME action to force a "final ruling" by judge garaufis on this case so that they can then appeal. From all I can gather, THAT is why the city has not appealed YET.

There is no way that the judge has all eternity to sit on this case and NEVER issue a final ruling. There MUST be a time limit, statute of limitations, SOMETHING that compels him to move.

Any legal minds have any insight into this? I can't wrap my mind around it. I will call my contact in the fdny later today to ask for the billionth time, but so far, no information on that topic is available.

    Good luck all 6019 brothers!

No I'm not on the List but a real close family member is. Former employee of

another large east coast city dept. Went through the same BS where I live

quotas were in use for many years, and as I've said before on this blog it

ruined the job. Now we have all black houses and all white houses. You must

remember that Bloomy is no friend of the FF and now it appears that his coat

holders are drifting farther away from the men they once worked with.

    Stay Strong.

Sal should have left with dignity. He'd held every rank short of commissioner and couldn't resist taking it. Remember, he is RETIRED from the FDNY. The position of commish is civilian and nothing more than a lackey to the mayor. To keep the job, it's "do as the major says", even if it's not for the good of the brothers. He couldn't be on your side even if he wanted to.

Sal is not your friend. He should have retired with the respect he once had from the job. It's a shame.

well apparently(not sure) the judge wouldn't have jurisdiction over a new test, so although its not a popular thing to say on this forum, the city might be using a new test as their main plan. Or at least thats the impression I got from posters who have answered this question in the past.
