. So are you saying the class is going to be 300 or are you thinking the jan class will only be around 150 , since you said each probie gets 2 books ???????

I'm just stating from a source at metrotech that they have enough candidates already that are set for jan 09 class. However your absolutely right that many may defer ,some may fail the run. I just don't see that many deferring since of the amount that deferred from the first class

This is entirely based on the Info in the last few posts. I sat down and did some math. Lemme know what you guys think of my logic.

    Class 02-08 = 315 Probys (225 off 6019, and 90 EMS)

Class 02-08 on our list went from #'s 1-887 to get 225 guys.

887/225 = 3.94 list numbers to get one of the guys actually into the class.

    3.94 x 150 (possible class size) = 591 list numbers.

    591 + 887 = 1478.

This would echo some the statements that they are going to get to the 1500's and/or hire 150 guys.

There won't be 90 EMS promotionals for jan class. Promotional classes are usually every 2 years. There will only be a few promotionals that might have deferred etc. going into the jan 08 class.

right, thats why i divided 887 (the list number they reached) by 225 (the number of guys off list 6019) and not 315 (the number of guys that went into the class, to include the promo's)

hopefully they have some leftover binders laying around...

Last time I talked to my investigator I was told that they had orders to fill up a class of 300. That was about a month ago. Who knows though, all you can do is wait.

i heard about 300 and a big possibility of shortening the academy to 3-4 months in length

I'm sure he meant 300 pairs of proby manuals. I dont think they are going to shrink the size of the class. They may shorten the length, but dont count on it. Just to give a little info from my perspective. I am in the current class and have a great time so far. Sure its challanging but anything worth while is. I have made life long friends and learn new things everyday. This week they sent us to a 4 man engine company. (You will find out what thay means soon enough) And it really is the greatest job in the world. I have been working there since sunday. I get there at like 730 and leave at like 7 everyday and it just doesnt feel like "work." You clean and do dishes and grease the fittings and check the rig but when the tones go off, its a huge rush. The guys in the house are awesome and helpful. Even if your class turns out to be 6 months like mine, stick it out and bust your ***.
MY ADVISE: and you'll hear it again from the Lt.'s: Shutup and listen, let your actions do the talking for you; and always step up. GOOD LUCK GUYS, If you give it 100% there is no reason for you not to make it.

I cant imagine probie school being cut short. One of the reason they made probie school longer was so the city could pay Probies 25,100 for an extra 3 mounths. But now it dosent matter if its 3 months or 6. It was a way for the city to save money. FDNY is going to look to make cuts in other areas. I dont think they are going after hirees right now. Maybe that will come with the later classes.

Exam6019, is it historically accurate to say that they only take EMS promos every couple of classes or couple of years?

Sure do hope they got some extra binders lying around at the rock.

Yes - You'll have to squeeze two books into one binder!

    Default food for thought

As of right now , jan class is still on for 300. However, I was told the following classes will probably be 200, maybe little less. With probably a 3 to 1 ratio , this list will probably reach low to mid 4000 before expiring in 2012.

so the math that i do is by taking your list number and subtracting 1500 or wherever the list is after 2 classes. You can then take this and divide by six more classes assuming they have that many, no hiring freezes etc. You can then divide this number by the ratio of hirings. Approximately 3:1 but I think this ratio will rise as we start getting further and further away from the test date. I think an average of a 3.5:1 ratio or even a 4:1 or higher ratio is more representative average for the presumed 8 classes. The number you get is the minimum of firefighters they need to hire per class to get to your number before the list expires.

    Default FDNY classes

First class was of 315 for JULY 2008
Approx 90 were EMS/EMT from their own separate promotional exam
Also take into account individuals that deferred for later classes
They reached list # 886 to appoint 225 into the academy
    That is a ratio of 1: 3.937

    January 2009 class
Lets assume that the class will be of 300.
From what I read very few from promotional exam in this class..(approx. 20).
Also take into account that just like many people deferred the July 2008 class the first time called there will prob be the same amount that will defer employment the first time they are called for the JAN 2009 class.
In order to appoint 280 they will need (3.937 x 280) = 1102 list numbers.

886 list #'s for first class
1102 list #'s for the second class

    886 + 1102 = 1988

Possible that they can reach upto list # 1988 for appointment once the January 2009 class is filled.

i like the logic to the previous post but sounds like the rumers floating around this site is that they are only going to 1500 for the next class. maybe more people that deferred are accepting entrance into this class. The deferral rate is kinda that unknown that really throws things off. Maybe half deferred from the first class or maybe only 10%. I have no idea.
